Are we ever going to get more parking?

15 Struggles All OU Students Can Relate To

Being from Oklahoma, you know all of the traditions that are tied to the University of Oklahoma, but only students from OU know the true struggles.

I’m a senior at the University of Oklahoma and while I love my school, I still have my complaints. I realize nothing is perfect but there are things that could be better with a little bit of effort and less ignorance. The rush of the new school year brings a lot of crowds in places that are not equipped for a large amount of people.

1. Parking

With the construction of the new dorms taking away a parking lot, there are a lot more people taking the highly encouraged Lloyd Noble shuttle. Typically the shuttle isn’t a problem, but now the commute from the Lloyd Noble takes over 30 minutes and is super inconvenient for everyone.

2. Bookstore

Oh, you ordered your books 10 days before classes started and still haven’t received them? I understand that there are a lot of people trying to get their books but it’s almost crunch time already.

3. Heat at the first home game

Late August and early September in Oklahoma are almost too hot to handle; the temperature is in the 90s, the sun is working overtime, and the humidity will zap almost all of your energy away.

4. Classes being far apart

Campus is big, maybe not the biggest in the country, but when you have a class in Sarkey’s and then have a lecture in Dale hall with only 10 minutes to commute it feels like you’re trying to cross the Pacific.

5. The Cafeteria

We all want the caf but no one wants to pay $11 to get in the door. Finding a freshman to donate to your tummy can be hard to do but it’s definitely worth the try.

6. Union lunch rush

Hungry at 12? I hope you have an hour to spare because Laughing Tomato can only sling their wraps so fast.

7. Starbucks line

What college student doesn’t want Starbucks? It’s not just for white girls and the line you see in the Union for Starbucks will prove that.

8. Lindsey Street

Driving restrictions are so frustrating. Why can’t I turn left between noon and 6 p.m.?

9. Finding football tickets

Trying to catch a game with your friends but don’t have tickets? Better hope it’s the first game of the season and people don’t want to sweat to death.

10. Burger night at McNellies

$4 burger night is a hit. A delicious meal for less than $6 is a steal. What isn’t a steal though is the wait for the food.

11. OUMM

Stop the emails. Please.

12. Construction

The construction is the cause of a lot of headaches in Norman, Okla.

13. $5 for the entire semester for printing

Come on OU, $5 is not going to do the trick.

14. Tuition increases

When Oklahoma cuts funds for public universities, we all get the short end of the stick. The professors don’t even get paid more. What’s up with that?

15. The Huff

The free weight room is always male dominated. It is what it is.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
