Michigan is one of the greatest states. We are known for four seasons, Yoopers and the Great Lakes. However, there is more to us Michiganders than that. We live in a great big state with many different things to offer. Here are 15 signs anyone can relate to that lives or is from the grand state of Michigan.

1. Having an "upnorth"

Up north to other states is just a direction. For Michiganders though it is a noun, a place we go. We ride snowmobiles in the winter and go boating in the summer. Friends will ask, "Hey wanna go upnorth with me next weekend?" and you know right there it's about to be the time of your life.

2. M-59 aka Hall Road aka a nightmare

The great, endless Hall Road. All Michiganders know the nightmare that can be encountered when driving on Hall Road. The traffic never ends and there is too many stop lights to count.

3. Using your hand as a map

Ask any Michigander the question, "Where do you live in Michigan?" and don't be alarmed when we whip out our hand to point where we live. Our state is shaped like a mitten, it is our own personal map.

4. Saying "ope" instead of "excuse me"

If you didn't realize this before say it to yourself a few times and then you will. Michiganders don't believe in the words "excuse me" we say "ope" and act very dramatic while saying it.

5. Pot holes

Moment of silence for all the damage pot holes have caused to our tires and cars. What is weird is there is always road construction but never any pot holes being fixed...?

6. Saying "Pop"

We get it, everyone makes fun of us Michiganders for saying pop instead of soda but to us IT MAKES SENSE! So, leave us alone.

7. You're looked down on for owning a foreign car

How dare you spend your money on foreign products when Michigan is home of the motor city. That isn't made up that is our actual slogan. We drive and make GM cars proudly.

8. Meijer

If you're not from Michigan I guess you wouldn't know this grand supermarket. It has groceries, clothes, home isle, medicine, everything you could dream of and good sales as well. You're missing out if you never experienced a midnight trip to Meijer.

9. Having another country right across the river.

Canada, Oh, Canada. Turning 19 is the same as turning 21 for the Michiganders lucky enough to live close to the border. I can drive a half hour away and enjoy the pleasures of alcohol before turning the age of 21.

10. The bipolar weather

Yes, we might have four seasons but what people don't know is we normally experience them within a week. One day it's sunny and finally summer, and the next is a blizzard and snow boots.

11. Smashing our words together

If you don't understand what I mean say these words out loud: Clothes- we don't say the T, Secretary of State- we say secretary a state, mirror- we don't pronounce the or.

12. Michigan Lefts

You other states have U-turns well we took that word and made it better.

13. Die hard kid rock and Eminem fans

Knowing the "Greatest Rapper Alive" is from Detroit is heart warming. Along with having the proud Kid Rock always shouting out our city.

14. You have oceans we have the Great Lakes

Lakes are thought to be "small" bodies of water. Not for Michigan, these lakes are so huge you could compare it to the ocean and we don't have that nasty salt after taste.

15. Being proud of Detroit

Michiganders are sick of the hate Detroit receives. We are proud of our city no matter what rep the city receives. Detroit VS everybody!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
