15 Signs You Grew Up in NYC

Growing up in one of the biggest cities in the world definitely has it's ups and downs. Being in the place where dreams are made of gives you a different attitude on life that is unique to the mindset of the New York streets.

Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx, Staten Island, no matter where you're from, you'll probably relate to these facts about living in the greatest city in the world.

1. You refer to Manhattan as "the city".

Even when you're not in New York, it's still the city. Let's be honest nothing else is worthy of the title.

2. The city isn't all that amazing to you.

You actually dread having to walk through places like Times Square because...ugh, tourists.

3. You spent way too much money on MetroCards.

The fact that they keep raising the prices doesn't help much either, where is the extra money going anyway if you still manage to run late even if you leave a hour early?

4. You know what REAL pizza is.

No matter what anyone claims, no pizza will compare to what you can find in the city.

5. And a REAL bagel.

Even if you choose the same type of bagel when you travel elsewhere, it just won't taste the same.

6. Central Park is nothing special to you.

Being one of the only large grassy areas in the midst of so many buildings, a trip to Central Park would feel like a trip to your backyard.

7. Going to a corner store would be a daily stop after or before school.

Also known as the deli or bodega, it would be the best place to stop by for a pack of gum and Arizona Iced Tea.

8. You walk fast. Sometimes too fast.

The GPS says a ten minute walk? You could be there in five.

9. You never really found a reason to learn how to drive.

Why go through all the effort to get a license anyway? Trains and buses will be faster and easier anyway.

10. You have food from all parts of the world at your finger tips.

You can walk down a block and try food from 3 different continents in just one meal, and you're probably familiar with the correct way to pronounce them as well.

11. You spent way too many nights studying for the "Regents" exams.

Although they allowed you to have extra days off from school, regents week was the equivalent of college finals week.

12. You find absolutely nothing wrong with eating food from a cart on the street.

It's hard to resist when it smells so good anyway. Nothing will be better than stopping at a cart for a hot dog or gyro.

13. You know how to sleep in a moving train, while standing and not holding on to anything.

With the long commutes to work or school, and sometimes train traffic that can last hours, any rest is worth it. You know how to get some shut eye while on the train and still manage to get off at your stop.

14. Forget about getting a giant mansion, your dream is to get the perfect apartment overlooking the city.

Who needs a three story house when you can aim for a penthouse with the best view imaginable.

15. Although you probably complain about it all the time, you know living in New York City beats anywhere else.

With a view you'll never get sick of.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
