As a resident of Virginia for my entire life, there are many things that I have realized are common for this state. No matter where you live, there are certain characteristics that can be understood by everyone in Virginia, and if you live here, then I’m sure you will find that a majority of these apply to you too.

You can never predict the weather
A farm could exist five feet away from a bustling city
Wawa is the holy land
Virginia Tech & UVA apparel is everywhere
You can’t escape people from NOVA
History is literally on every square inch of land
Jamestown was the destination for class field trips
Everyone pretends to know Washington D.C. like the back of their hand
You are either team Busch Gardens or team King’s Dominion
You probably have a friend who loves PBR more than they should
And you probably have a friend who says the word “ya’ll”
Cracker Barrels are inescapable
There is always a variety of delicious donut places
Everyone goes to the Outer Banks when they go to the beach
And people love to bring up the famous people who were born here, as if they know them personally

But, even if some of these things may have gotten old over time, you still appreciate them and you still love them, because it reminds you of the place you love to call home: Virginia.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.
