The term “soulmate” is usually thought to be a significant other, but a best friend can be a soulmate, too. Urban Dictionary defines soulmate as “a person with whom you have an immediate connection the moment you meet -- a connection so strong that you are drawn to them in a way you have never experienced before. Your soulmate understands and connects with you in every way and on every level, which brings a sense of peace, calmness and happiness when you are around them. And when you are not around them, you are all that much more aware of the harshness of life, and how bonding with another person in this way is the most significant and satisfying thing you will experience in your lifetime. You are also all that much aware of the beauty in life, because you have been given a great gift and will always be thankful." That pretty much sums it up.
1. You don't want to go anywhere without them.
“I want wine, will you go to the store with me? I don’t want to go alone.”
“Only if I can wear my pajamas and have a glass when we get back.”
2. When they’re in a bad mood, you’re in a bad mood.
It may be partially because you don't want to say the wrong thing because you know they’re going to snap soon, or just because when they’re upset, you’re upset. You’re pretty much their other half anyways, right?
3. Their opinion is necessary in every situation.
“Between these two nail styles, which one do you like better?” or “Okay, seriously. Is my eye makeup too much today?” And you never hesitate to take their advice.
4. Their pets are your pets.
Especially if you live or have lived with them. I think the best part of getting home from class everyday is going into my best friend’s room and letting her dog out to keep me company. And eventually, their pet might start to like you more than them…
5. They’re completely comfortable with sitting on your bathroom floor talking to you while you get ready.
It gets kinda lonely anyways, am I right? Plus, if you need makeup advice, they’re there for you.
6. You actually look forward to best friend date nights.
Whether it's a hot date with the couch and a good movie or dinner and drinks, every minute with your best friend is much anticipated after a long day.
7. There’s no such thing as personal space.
They’re at one end of the couch, but you still proceed to basically sit on top of them when you want to sit down. Sometimes, you might even kick their boyfriend out just so you can be close to them, and they don't ask a single question (her or her boyfriend, he knows the ropes by now).
8. What’s yours is theirs, and what’s theirs is yours.
At this point, you’re probably past the “Can I borrow that?” stage. It’s more like, “Hey, I needed a cute sweater to wear today and I liked yours better than mine.” Or even, “Your phone case charges and I have 12 percent battery, switch me for a little bit,” and you’re happy to do so.
9. You never laugh alone.
Okay, maybe sometimes, but not usually. That video that you laughed at for five minutes straight? Show them. They will too, you’re never alone.
10. “When will you be home?” texts are sent at least once a day.
If you live with your best friend, it happens even more often. “When will you be back? I thought you said you’d only be gone for a few hours...” Then comes the “Honey, I’m home” text as soon as they pull in the driveway.
11. Your problems are their problems.
From something you read on WebMD (which convinced you that you’re dying) to a current fight with your boyfriend; there are no boundaries and no judgment. They’ll listen and support you every step of the way, even if they have to take your phone away for a little while because Google can’t diagnose you.
12. There’s no such thing as awkward silence.
There may be silence because you just don’t feel like talking, but it won’t be awkward. Before long, one of you will say a stupid movie quote or burst out in song.
13. They know the password on your phone and aren’t afraid to go send embarrassing messages to people.
Your phone lights up with a message and she can’t stop giggling because whatever she just sent them is about to get a heck of a response because chances are, it was obscene and maybe a tad bit inappropriate.
14. You two have so much in common, it’s scary.
From food preferences to people. If one of you doesn't like someone, neither does the other. And food? That's easy.
“I’ll have a number four with everything on the side and fries instead of onion rings.”
“Just make that two.”
*dramatic wink*
15. They bring out the best in you.
They don’t bring you down, they encourage you. You’re at your best when you’re with them. You feel genuinely happy and comfortable. You don’t have to worry about saying the wrong thing because odds are, they’ll always agree with you. Most importantly, they don't laugh at you, they laugh with you.
