We've all heard the old classics: "I'm the king of the world." "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse." "You talkin' to me?" "May the Force be with you." "Rosebud..." Yes, yes, yes. They are very famous, and some of them deserve to be at the top. The problem is these same quotes are consistently making the top of the American Film Institute's list of 100 Movie Quotes, and other lists like it.
But aren't you sick of seeing these at the top over and over again as cinema's greatest quotes of all time? Wouldn't you rather reading more modern, refreshing, hidden gem movie quotes that bring a clean smell in the air? More importantly, aren't we all tired of seeing "Frankly my dear I don't give a damn" portrayed with "my dear" flanked by commas? Listen the line from the movie. There are no pauses in how Clark Gable says his line. Same thing in "Forget it Jake it's Chinatown." But who's complaining? We are here to revel in 15 somewhat less well-known quotes from equally brilliant movies.
1. "Keep looking at me. It helps to keep my soul from flying off." – "The Man Who Would Be King"
The perfect sound bite to start us off. I love this quote. It comes at the very start of the movie right before Peachy tells Kipling how he came to be looking so haggard. What a story it is.
2. "I saw a snail crawl along the edge of a straight razor." – "Apocalypse Now"
From what I know, straight razor blades are some of the sharpest things out there. And a snail? They're pretty soft. Either this was one tough snail, or Colonel Kurtz was having some major introspective thoughts.
3. "Love is the one we're capable of perceiving that transcends dimensions of time and space." – "Interstellar"
What a lovely idea to hold on to. Brand tells Cooper her theories of love as an artifact of an unperceiveble higher dimension. It's not as complicated as it sounds. Interstellar is easy to watch—trust me.
4. "What are you grinning at, you ghost?" – "Field of Dreams"
Ray Liotta always had a creepy face. As infamous Black Sox scandal member "Shoeless" Joe Jackson, he helps Kevin Costner to get back in touch with his old man.
5. "All I know is that the boy was my charge. And if he was not the word of God. Then God never spoke." – "The Road"
Set in a bleak and unforgiving cannibalistic post-apocalyptic America, it's hard to imagine the people of this land ever having a belief in God.
6. "I want you to exit this guy off the premises and I want you to exit him off his feet and use his head to open the f*ckin' door." – "Casino"
Martin Scorcese's movie, starring famous acting pair Robert DeNiro and Joe Pesci, is ranked sixth on the list of films containing the most amount of f-bombs. This instance is one of 422 times the f-bomb is dropped, and it's a funny one at that!
7. "What happened to the old bank? It was beautiful!" – "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"
Old West bank robbers of Wyoming... Butch and Sundance have been checking the banks, only to find the security was boosted.
8. "Just know that every man I kill, the farther away from home I feel." – "Saving Private Ryan"
A sad line that reminds us of the cost of war, and the effect it has on those who fight, and often come down to a choice of kill or be killed. It's a necessary, albeit difficult, choice for a captain who wants to get back home.
9. "I'm so cold." – "North Face"
The last words of Toni Kurz, a German mountaineer who has a disastrous day climbing the notorious Eiger. This is a heart-wrenching movie filmed in German, but with all the emotion of a movie in your native language.
10. "I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die." – "Blade Runner"
The philosophical poetry of a robot? Things do get a little weird in Ridley Scott's "Blade Runner."
11. "Hanako . . . We soldiers dig. We dig all day." – "Letters from Iwo Jima"
The musings of a war-weary foot soldier in the Japanese Imperial Army during WWII. Yet another soldier who feels caught up in something bigger than himself, and who just wants to get back to his wife.
12. "I would rather spend one lifetime with you than face all the ages of this world alone." – "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring"
This is one of the most romantic lines I have ever heard, especially coming from an immortal elf who would sacrifice her immortality to be with a mortal man.
13. "Which would be worse: to live as a monster, or to die as a good man?" – "Shutter Island"
Well which is it? Is he cured or not?
14. "Listen, here's the thing. If you can't spot the sucker in your first half hour at the table... then you are the sucker." – "Rounders"
Matt Damon stars in a coming of age movie that deals bad hands to everyone.
15. "Caesar is home." – "Rise of the Planet of the Apes"
Let this be known as the first time a chimpanzee is able to speak English.
