'Tis the season for scary stories and creepypastas, but nothing beats a good ol' fashioned Halloween-themed film to get you into the spirit of the holiday! In honor of my birthday (yes, it's actually on October 31st!), I decided to come up with a list of the Top 15 Halloween-season movies that reek of spookiness. You may see some familiar films that bring memories flooding back, but there might also be some new ones to discover!
These films speak to the Halloween-season, based on the magic they each possess. They all contain magic in different ways, from the wave of a wand to the belief in stories. I can honestly say that I have a deep connection to each of these movies. As a part of Generation Y, these films have grown with us since we were kids until we felt more comfortable with the real life scenarios, or shall I say the rated R movies.
As I continue to grow older, these films still hold a special place in my heart because they fill my heart and mind with memories of being a young child looking forward to watching my favorite Halloween themed movies that would be shown on television. With new technology making everything look so real, it's nice to be able to turn to these movies that once scared me and now laugh. Obviously, there are more movies I could add to this list that deserve to be here, but I chose these specific films that best represented the transition of my childhood to adulthood.
Enjoy!
The "Halloweentown" Series
Personally, out of this list of movies, "Halloweentown" has to be my absolute favorite. There are so many joyful memories I remember from looking forward to watching the movie and even during the movie. The grandma is my favorite character, since she brings the movie to life with her sarcasm.
"Casper"
"The Nightmare Before Christmas"
Growing up, I was a little terrified of Tim Burton's version of a Halloween Town but as I grew older I found their version of a Halloween land to be desirable. It is both spooky yet fun. I can only wish Halloween was as big of a holiday as it is in this movie.
"Corpse Bride"
"Hocus Pocus"
"Ghostbusters"
"The Addams Family" Series
"It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown"
Automatically, this Peanut Halloween special is a classic. No one can resist Charlie Brown, Snoopy and the rest of the Peanut gang from learning about the great pumpkin. This episode is based off Charlie Brown's best friend Linus' story of a great pumpkin while the rest of the friends go trick or treating.
"Beetlejuice"
"Edward Scissorhands"
"Young Frankenstein"
"Monster House"
To start, Monster House has an incredible dark back story to it. For a husband to love his wife so much to build her a house from scratch where she dies within the construction of the house, to only bring the house to life is terrifying. It takes Frankenstein's Monster and a haunted house to the next level.
"The Exorcist"
"Halloween"
The "Harry Potter" Series
The Harry Potter series is definitely a must see. I have followed Harry Potter and his gang of Griffendor friends since I was about the same age as them. You can automatically relate to them as people by the way they created relationships with each other, as well as the feeling of coming to a new school. The best part however, is all the great magical spells Harry and his friends come to learn. Plus, all the scenes where they are eating at the dining hall is always filled with great food especially sweets.
