As melodramatic as it may seem, sometimes I think that I need to listen to music as much as I need to breathe, so suffice it to say that I am constantly looking for new songs and artists. I pretty much have an ongoing personal playlist that I update every day with my favorite music by relatively unknown bands and singers, but there are a few that stand out and I decided they're too good to keep a secret. So, in short, you're welcome.
P.S. I am in no way a pretentious expert on music, but these are just my personal opinions and suggestions for people who are into the kind of indie/alternative/techno/pop music that doesn't always get radio time.
1. BANNERS

This English voice was sent straight from heaven to grace the ears of humble souls like you and me, and if you listen to nothing else, at least listen to his song “Ghosts” — if you’ve ever left behind some experience or some person because life just got in the way, but you still yearn for days gone by, then this song will resonate with you (But all his songs are equally as great, and there are not that many so I do highly recommend you listen to them all).
2. Kygo

A Norwegian DJ who recently came on the scene as a newer alternative to artists like Avicii and Tiesto, Kygo has been making waves all around the world with hits like “Stay," “Firestone” and, my personal favorite, "Stole the Show."
3. James Morrison

Morrison is an English singer-songwriter comparable to the likes of James Blunt and James Bay (apparently England is just full of men named James who sing). Morrison has some great tunes like “Broken Strings” (still gives me chills) and “Demons," just to name a few.
4. LÉON
A singer so new to the scene that I couldn't even find a Wikipedia page for her (that's when you know), this Swede not only has a killer unique voice, but the kind of catchy songs that you hum along to all day long (willingly, even). I like everything on her debut EP, but right now I'm really digging "Nobody Cares." Plus, she's just begun her first North American tour ever so give her a warm welcome and go see her live before she becomes a household name.
5. The Griswolds

One of my absolute favorite indie bands, the Griswolds is an Australian band most famous for their hit "Beware the Dog" detailing what happens when you realize your ex is well... "f*cking crazy." Some other good ones include "If You Wanna Stay" and "16 Years."
6. Walking on Cars

"So if I stand in front of a speeding car, would you tell me who you are? What you like?"
This five-piece from the tiny Dingle peninsula in Ireland pack a lot of power in their songs, and have captured my heart with both their old tunes and their new album, "Everything This Way." I would describe them as soft alternative, similar to the Lumineers and the Head and the Heart, but very unique at the same time.
7. Years & Years

Already making waves through the European music scene, I have yet to hear much of these guys in the States. Described as an "electronica trio," these three English boys have produced some absolute jams for people who like to dance, such as "Kings" and "Desire," but show that they have a softer side in the song that first introduced me to them, "Eyes Shut," which remains my favorite.
8. Sigala

A similar artist to Years & Years, Sigala is an English DJ whose most famous song, "Easy Love," brought in parts of "ABC" by the Jackson 5 to produce a modern dance song that reinvigorates the old-style tune. Plus, the fact that you already know the words just makes it that much easier to fall in love with.
9. Kodaline

An Irish band that got their first big break here in America when their song "All I Want" was featured on the soundtrack for "The Fault in Our Stars." These four guys are giving the Script, a more established Irish rock band, a run for their money with upbeat tempos and slow ballads to satisfy any mood. Check out "Brand New Day" for happy feels, "High Hopes" for sad feels and "Love Will Set You Free" for the most glorious nostalgic feels. Plus, I'm a big fan of their album covers.
10. Bad Suns

One of the few American artists to make this list, Bad Suns is an alternative rock band from California who first hooked me when I got their song "Cardiac Arrest" as the iTunes free single of the week a few years ago. I recently got back into them after finding some of their newer stuff - "We Move Like the Ocean," "20 Years" and "Dancing on Quicksand" to name a few — and can't get their songs out of my head now. Do yourself a favor and look these guys up!!
11. KYKO

Not to be confused with the aforementioned Kygo, KYKO is a 19-year-old English singer-songwriter from South London whose indie pop songs like "Animals" and "Headlights" are some of my favorite songs to listen to as I walk around campus or attempt to do homework (key word: attempt).
12. Ben Rector

I think I accidentally stumbled upon Ben Rector when I was looking up songs by Ben Howard one time, and that was probably the happiest mistake of my life because his voice has sung me to sleep countless times since that fateful day. His new song, "Brand New," literally makes me dance around my room and daydream, but pretty much all his songs are timeless and worth a listen ("Beautiful" and "When I'm With You" will probably have you falling in love; it's fine).
13. Keywest

Though not well known in America yet, these Irish lads made my days in Dublin extra bright when I would pass by them busking on Grafton Street. They perform concerts, but realize the importance of keeping street music alive and even started campaigns to save busking when the city council threatened to ban some forms of street entertainment - just an additional reason to love them. Check out "Carousel," "iGeneration" and "This is Heartbreak" to get a taste of their pop/rock vibe.
14. A Silent Film
Seeing as how I currently have their new album, A Silent Film, on repeat, you could say I saved one of my all-time favorites for last. A Silent Film out of Oxford, England is a soft alternative-type band that first captured my attention with their song "Danny, Dakota, & the Wishing Well," which is still a classic for me because of the enthralling manner in which it tells a story to anyone who listens. Off their new album, though, you absolutely have to listen to "Chinese Lanterns" and "Evergreen" and then join me in begging them to tour the Northeast (please).
