After I found out that I was offered a position with the housing department on campus for the duration of the summer semester, my mind immediately went to what I would do when I had free time. Since most people are going home, including my friends, I did a little research for activities that could fill my off days.

So if you're in the same boat as me, looking for activities to keep you from just binge-watching "The Office" for the fifth time, then you've come to the right place.

Here are 13 things to do in Tuscaloosa this summer that will make you excited about staying.

1. Rent a paddleboard or kayak

Even if you have no balance, it's definitely worth giving it a shot. You can rent these bad boys at the Rec Center for a very reasonable price, but who are we kidding, the memories you'll make will be priceless. You'll just have to figure out how in the world you are going to strap them down to the roof of your car.

2. Head over to one of the lakes

You'll have a few options when it comes to lakes in Tuscaloosa. Between Lake Nicol, Lake Tuscaloosa, and Lake Lurleen, I'm almost positive you can find your perfect fit. Just be careful and cautious if you decide to jump off the cliffs.

3. Swimming at the Rec

If you don't want to venture too far from campus, you can always head over to the Rec Center and enjoy their indoor and outdoor pools. We even have our own water slide. Like how much better can it get?

4. Camping

Just like the kayaks and paddleboards, you can rent everything you would need for a night out in the woods at the Rec Center. There are a few places to choose from, but from reviews, Deerlick Creek would be the place to go.

Remember to be responsible and don't do anything too stupid. Also, pick up after yourself when you leave. No one wants to clean up your mountain of solo cups.

5. Hurricane Creek Park

Since this park is open from dawn to dusk, you really have no excuse to make it out. This park has been operating for the past twenty-four years, and it is still going strong. Come check out the beautiful scenery, explore, or take a dip in the creek. You can even kayak here as well.

6. Check out the farmer's market

Every Friday from 7 a.m. - 12 noon, you can go down to the River Market and see just what they have to offer. From fresh produce to honey, the farmers have anything you could want. Also, it would just be a cool experience to check off on your bucket list.

7. Uptown Art

Painting, socializing, and drinking, if you're of age, makes the perfect combination for a night out with friends. Even if you think you will mess it up, the instructors at Uptown Art will make sure you leave with a beautiful canvas and memories to look back on.

8. Go to the Animal Shelter

If you're worried about being lonely this summer, you can always go and visit the sweet babies at the local animal shelters. If you are feeling really adventurous, you can even rent a dog for a few hours. I'm sure that this will be a solid way to put a smile on your face and make your day.

9. Try out some new restaurants

If you have yet to discover some of the best food in Tuscaloosa, now is your time. Taco Mama, Mugshots, and Buffalo Phil's are a must, but I would also try places like Avenue Pub, Holler & Dash, and Another Broken Egg Cafe.

10. Head over to Steel City Pops

This place is honestly the greatest. With so many flavors to choose from, you'll definitely be standing there for a minute as you contemplate exactly what flavor to get. The best thing, however, is that you can trade your popsicle for another flavor if you dislike your original choice.

11. Get tickets to a concert

If you are into country music, there are plenty of country stars coming to Tuscaloosa this summer. However, if that's not your style, Birmingham is only a short drive from T-town.

12. Upsurge

If you're looking for a complete body workout, this is the place to go. I promise, no matter how fit you think you are, you will be sore the next day. It's a guarantee, but it is also a guarantee that you will have a great time. Who doesn't want to go jump on trampolines all day?

13. Breakout Tuscaloosa

If you are a fan of escape rooms, this is the activity for you. On Thursdays, college students receive a discount in which tickets are only $10 with a student I.D. With three rooms averaging only a 30% escape rate, you are sure to have a good time.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
