13 Questions Parents Ask College Kids On Thanksgiving Break

It's always nice when you get to go home for a couple days, and with Thanksgiving break coming up, a lot of students are heading home to spend the holiday with their family. Every time I go back to visit, I always dread getting asked certain questions that I usually try to avoid over the phone, and my answer is always way different than how I actually feel.

1. "Are you dating anybody new?"

What I'm really thinking: No, I'm not dating anybody new, but thank you for the reminder!

What I actually say: No, I'm just too busy with schoolwork and Greek life to make time for anybody right now!

2. "How's school going?"

What I'm really thinking: I'm basically a failure and wasting my tuition money, but it's ok!!! I'm fine, really!!!

What I actually say: Oh, it's going great! My professor hasn't posted my grades yet though!

3. "Are you getting enough sleep?"

What I'm really thinking: I pulled 3 all nighters last week and I sleep through most of my classes, but it's ok, really.

What I actually say: I go to sleep at 11:30 every night! I usually get a couple hours of studying done in the library beforehand too.

4. "Do you plan on getting a job soon?"

What I'm really thinking: I've only applied 10 different places, and didn't get a call back from any of them... I'm obviously overqualified.

What I actually say: Oh, the manager of ________ said he would call me soon, so fingers crossed!

5. "Whatever happened to ________? You never talk about her anymore!"

What I'm really thinking: Well we got into a fight and don't speak to each other anymore..

What I actually say: Oh, she's fine! We've grown apart a little but I still see her everyday!

6. "Are you exercising?"

What I'm really thinking: If the amount of times I lift my hand up from the popcorn bowl to my mouth while binge watching Netflix counts as exercise, then I'm in the best shape of my life.

What I actually say: Yeah, I've been going to the gym at least 3 times a week!

7. "How was homecoming? Im sure it was a lot of fun!"

What I'm really thinking: Oh, I only wasted 2 months of my life in the pomping room listening to the same 3 songs over and over again, but so fun wow!

What I actually say: Homecoming was a blast! I made a ton of new friends!

8. "Why don't you ever send us any pictures anymore?

What I'm really thinking: Oh my gosh, don't you creep on my Instagram enough?

What I actually say: Oh, I just don't take all that many pictures! Just look on my Instagram!

9. "Why don't you ever come home to visit us?"

What I'm really thinking: Because coming home to my hometown that has nothing to do really doesn't sound appealing. Oh, especially when you still give me a curfew.

What I actually say: I've just been way too busy with my schoolwork!

10. "I was considering sending you a care package but I thought you would be fine. Is there anything you want?"

What I'm really thinking: Seriously? Of course I want a care package! Money, please. Just send a box of money.

What I actually say: Yeah that would be really nice! All I really need is money though!

11. "I saw on Facebook that your ex has a new girlfriend, they look really cute together!"

What I'm really thinking: Oh, I know he has a new girlfriend. I've already stalked every account she owns, and it's ok, I was prettier than her in middle school. But thank you for pointing it out, after he broke my heart.

What I actually say: Yeah, she seems very nice.

12. "Have you started looking for internships yet?"

What I'm really thinking: If I can't find a job, what makes you think I can find an internship?

What I actually say: I've been talking to my professor about it and he said he will help me look!

13. "You looked like you've gained weight, are you eating ok?"

What I'm really thinking: I usually just live off of pizza and red bull, so obviously I'm eating super healthy! But thank you, for pointing that out.

What I actually say: I've been eating healthy for the most part, I'm just busy and don't have time to work out like I used to!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
