Thirteen Lessons Taylor Swift Taught Me

No, Taylor doesn't just write about breakups.

In light of the break up of Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris, a lot of people have taken to tearing her down, more so than ever before. As I am a hardcore Swiftie, I've grown up with her music, concerts, and interviews. In this time, Taylor has taught me a lot that I'd like to share with you.

13. Smart people learn from their own mistakes. Smarter people learn from others' mistakes.

I think one of Taylor's most underated songs is Mary's Song, which is about the love her neighbors had for each other growing up.

12. The holidays are about a lot more than just presents.

That's right, she's got a Christmas album. Some of my favorites are Christmas Must Be Something More, Christmases When You Are Mine, and her remake of Santa Baby.

11. Falling in love is special.

Listen, I get it, not everyone falls in love and if you do, it's not always picture perfect. That is not to say it shouldn't be. Songs like Love Story, Hey Stephen, and Our Song capture those first few weeks, right after the crush stage.

10. It's okay to be goofy.

One of my favorite songs from Taylor is Thug Story. Tay and T-Pain get silly in this song that parodies Love Story.

9. Haters gonna hate!

I'm not sure who coined this first, Taylor or my mom. It's a lesson that served me well throughout high school. Obviously you can hear the message in Shake It Off, but some of her earlier songs, like A Place In This World, Tied Together With A Smile, and The Outside also touch upon the subject.

8. Getting older stinks!

Is there anything worse than moving into a new apartment all alone? Here Taylor's oppinion in Never Grow Up.

7. Girl Code is alive and well.

We girls need to stick together! Is the feud between Katy and Taylor immature? Yes, of course. And were we totally astounded when Taylor wrote Better Than Revenge about a certain lady who "is better known for what she does on the mattress"? Duh! We might have learned how not to react in these situations. Sorry Tay!

6. You are NOT your stereotype.

Because I've been a Swiftie since I was in fifth grade, I get super protective whenever anyone says Taylor only writes songs about breakups. Her song Blank Space is her way of saying, "Here's your boy-crazy singer." It's nice to see at least she has a sense of humor.

5. The cutie will probably break your heart.

Listen, I'm super obsessed with T-Swift. That's why it shouldn't surprise you at all when I say this is one of my favorite quotes from every concert I've been to (that would be out of four.) The bad guy is never dressed in a black cape; usually he or she is super cute. Learn this message in most of Taylor's songs. These are good ones: Tell Me Why, Should've Said No, and We Are Never Getting Back Together.

4. It's so important to stay grounded.

Oh, Abigail. Everyone deserves an Abigail in their life. She is the girl who got her heart broken in Fifteen and I'm Only Me When I'm With You is dedicated to their friendship.

3. Your mom is your best friend.

The world of Swifties cried when we learned Andrea Swift had cancer. The song The Best Day is all about Taylor's relationship with her mother and if you want a good cry, I recommend you listen to it.

2. You don't always know how life is going to turn out.

It absolutely broke my heart when Abigail had her heart broken. Unfortunately, you just never know how life will work out. You can find this message in many songs, such as Change, Fifteen, and Everything Has Changed.

1. Being mean will never get you anywhere.

This is a lesson my parents drove into my head when I was little. So when Taylor writes songs about anyone who's ever been mean to her, I sing it at the top of my lungs. Taylor should rename herself Karma. You can find this message in Cold As You and Mean.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

The Importance Of Being A Good Person

An open letter to the good-hearted people.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
