Ah, romantic comedies, often affectionately referred to as rom-coms. Sometimes they're so cheesy and bad it's hard to watch, but you still can't look away. They're practically a sleepover staple when you're growing up, but they're definitely not something you grow out of. Despite the fact that you can definitely predict every twist and turn of the plot--the unlikely couple falls in love, gets in a fight, and one of them makes a ridiculous romantic gesture to save the day--it doesn't make them any less enjoyable. Grab some popcorn and some comfy sweats because here's my top 13 rom-coms of all time.
13. Clueless (1995)
This movie would definitely be ranked higher if she didn't...you know...fall in love with her ex step-brother at the end. I know their parents weren't together anymore but still, it's weird. Besides that, this movie is full of girl power and still somehow managed to get us to root for Cher and Josh to be together in the end. Plus, young Paul Rudd. Who doesn't love Paul Rudd?
12. Easy A (2010)
I tend to not be a fan of newer rom-coms, but I'll make an exception for "Easy A." This movie is absolutely hilarious and although it really doesn't feature too much romance, the entire movie I was dying for her to run off and be with Penn Badgley's character. Hilarious and cute. Good job, Emma Stone.
11. The Proposal (2010)
Another newer one that probably wouldn't make the cut if it weren't for the fact that it's so damn good. Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds play the stereotypical polar opposites in a rom-com...that somehow magically end up falling in love. Throw in some rap music and Betty White and you've got a quality movie.
10. Coyote Ugly (2000)
LET'S GIVE A CHEER FOR STRONG FEMALE CHARACTERS! "Coyote Ugly" is probably one of the most underrated rom-coms ever. The cute Australian boy who helps our female lead conquer her stage fright is a pretty good addition, too. I'm probably going to have "Can't Fight The Moonlight" stuck in my head for days now.
9. Pretty Woman (1990)
Who would have thought that a movie about a wealthy man falling for a prostitute would become such a classic? If you haven't seen "Pretty Woman" yet, go immediately. Seriously. Finish reading this article later and go watch it.
8. The Wedding Singer (1998)
Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler are quite possibly one of the best rom-com duos of all time, and "The Wedding Singer" is where I think that shines brightest. People either hate or love Adam Sandler movies, and they're definitely a guilty pleasure for me. The adorable friendship-turned-romance between Robby and Julia always made me melt, not to mention the adorable serenade by Robby at the end of the movie.
7. Bridget Jones' Diary (2001)
Quite simply, this wouldn't be a proper rom-com list with "Bridget Jones' Diary." Plus, Colin Firth is in this. Enough said.
6. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days (2003)
The plot line to this movie is kind of ridiculous, but somehow stll manages to be charming and funny. Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey slay in rom-coms, and this is no exception. I just went and watched the trailer for this movie and I got hit with some serious nostalgia.
5. Music and Lyrics (2007)
I'm not sure if I just really love Drew Barrymore, but this movie has a special place in my heart. Hugh Grant is delightfully adorable by her side. The cheesy plot line and silly comedy make for a quality rom-com. Maybe this is how I'll meet Joe Jonas when he's middle aged and washed up.4. Sweet Home Alabama (2002)
If I wasn't trying to avoid being biased, this movie would make the top of my list. Reese Witherspoon is a goddess for many reasons, and this movie is one of them. Not to mention, she had two totally adorable men pining for her. I still tear up at the cheesy ending when she says to Jake in the rain "So I can kiss you anytime I want."3. 27 Dresses (2008)
Whoever came up with the script for this movie, I just want to say thank you. "27 Dresses" follows the stereotypical rom-com plot line almost perfectly and is still completely amazing. All those dresses, all that adorableness...I'm looking at you, James Marsden. Plus, how can you not fall in love when they climb on the bar and sing "Bennie and the Jets?"
2. 13 Going On 30 (2004)
Before Mark Ruffalo was the Hulk, he was winning everyone's heart over as the adorable childhood best friend Matty. The chemistry between him and Jennifer Garner was palpable, and I basically squeal the whole time whenever I watch this movie. Matty and Jenna forever.
1. 10 Things I Hate About You (1999)
Who didn't see this one coming? From the gloriously feminist Kat to the adorable paintball fight to Heath Ledger belting his heart out while running down those bleachers (which, by the way, is how I want to be proposed to), you can't go wrong. Hands down, the best romantic comedy of all time.
Now, I don't know about you, but I'm pretty ready to go curl up on the couch with some snacks and binge watch all of these movies until I can't stomach the cheesy romance anymore. Anyone else?
