The majority of us were lucky enough to grow up with siblings. Despite the bickering and arguing when growing up, there is nothing like the bond between siblings. Besides the times we might have wished we were an only child, we always appreciated having a lifelong best friend, someone to share our secrets with and someone to make memories with. When we got older, our sibling moved out and started their own personal journey. If you were like me, your sibling moved across the country. Since my sister moved 10 years ago, I have only been able to see her a couple times each year. For people who have a sibling who lives across the country, we all understand a few things:
1. Spending the holidays without them has become a normal situation, and it sucks.
2. When you do get to spend the holidays together, it's extra special.
3. Leading up to the day you reunite, you have a countdown clock on your phone.
4. The first time you see each other in a while is the greatest day ever.
5. When you go to visit your sibling it feels like a vacation.
6. You have to budget visiting your sibling because plane tickets are expensive.
7. Because your sibling relationship is long distance, you miss out on some of life's most important moments.
8. You appreciate your time together more than most siblings.
9. You get along with your sibling better now, than you did as kids, because you rarely see them.
10. When they/you leave, you know it will be months until you see them again.
11. It's hard to accept the fact that you will most likely never live near each other again.
12. Despite the distance, you know your bond will never break and you will always be connected.
To my sister who lives across the country; to my sister who I only see a couple times a year; it's difficult having a long distance sibling relationship, but I can't wait until the next time I see you.
