Majoring in mass communication at Georgia College is an interesting experience. Let’s be honest, you chose this school because you wanted a “small-school feel,” and a small school is definitely what you got.

The best thing about being in mass comm is feeling like you know everyone. It's also great to have so many media fans around you.

Every major has its ups and downs. For those who study mass comm, you may understand something special about this major, through everyday experiences with your peers and professors.

Here are 12 things all mass comm students understand all too well:

1. As soon as you walk into class on the first day, you realize that you already know 95 percent of the people there.

As I said before, a perk of going to a small school are the small classes, and especially with a major like mass communication. It is likely that you’ve had an assignment with every person in the room before.

2. Group projects are life.

Mass comm professors love group projects. When I say love, I mean love. Everyday, it seems like there is a new group assignment to complete.

3. In mass comm, we don’t have tests. We have projects.

There might be a couple of tests in your classes, but the main focus is definitely on projects.

4. If there are tests, they will likely have some sort of essay question on them.

It is never just a “test,” because there's always an essay included.

5. No, we are not majoring in social media.

Although social media is a huge deal to mass comm students, there is way more to the major than figuring out how to tweet and post on Instagram.

6. When you see someone carrying around a giant video camera, you immediately have sympathy.

No matter what you want to do with your degree, you will likely have to film something for class. Carrying around a big camera is just one perk of being a mass comm student, as well as learning how to be a videographer overnight.

7. Don't let anyone tell you that your major is easy because you know that it definitely is not.

This major requires a lot of work, and there is rarely a time when you don’t feel stressed. You never know what the day is going to bring, so you have to be prepared for the worst.

8. You stress out about not having the right connections to get your dream job.

Your heart sinks every time you hear someone who works in the real world say, “I got this position because my dad’s friend’s niece works in the company.”

9. You're constantly worrying about your senior portfolio.

You begin worrying about your final portfolio during freshman year, yet you never feel accomplished despite the 12 different clubs you’re in right now.

10. With this major, you don’t just go to class, you do it all!

That’s right! You can’t just sit around and just do schoolwork all day. As a mass communication major, you have a responsibility to feel like you have to join any and every student media organization on campus.

11. At the end of the day, you love your major.

Despite everything that this major puts you through, you love what you’re doing and the people you get to be around.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
