There are several majors to choose from in college. I believe every single major is difficult in its own way, but there are so many misunderstandings about being an English major. I've heard several people say that being an English major is easy. No one really knows the struggles of being an English major unless you are one.
1. You analyze everything. You can't listen to a song without analyzing its lyrics. Or watch a movie without trying to find symbolism. It just messes with your brain.
2. When your professors assign you over 100 pages of reading for the night, but your other professor assigned the same amount of reading too for the same night, you start to contemplate your life choices.
3. When you complain about a 10-page paper you have to write on a book you hate. And people say, "Don't you like writing?" They just don't get it.
4. When you have more books than anything, but nowhere to store those books in your college room, you have to start choosing which books to keep at school with you.
5. You always hear, "What career can you have with an English degree?" There are plenty of jobs out there for English majors.
6. There are times when you will get writer's block at the most inconvenient times. Like when you have short story the next day, but have nothing to write about or are stuck in the middle of the story.
7. All your classes are mainly discussion-based, but you can never get a word in. You get excited because you finally get to blab all your points you've been holding in. So use your 15 minutes of fame to the best of your ability.
8. When you have to critique someone's story and you are trying to find something good to say about it when it's not up to par, sometimes you just have to force yourself to say something good about the story.
9. You have to put yourself out there. There are times when you know your story is bad, but you have the entire class saying it's a great story.
10. You die a little inside when people still can't distinguish the difference between your and you're, and they're, there, and their.
11. Reading and writing becomes you life to the point you start quoting books in your daily conversations with people, or you find yourself thinking of ideas for your next story.
12. Also, you know, at the end of the day, that your best friends are a laptop and a good book. You can always rely on them to be there for you during the most difficult times.
