No one between the ages of 18 to 21 knows what they're doing, in any aspect of life. In fact, I've been debating writing my parents an apology for the past few years. One thing in particular that this age group is blindly unaware of is dating. Whether you're a girl or a guy, you can probably relate to some of the following:
- Showing up to college with a high school sweetheart, thinking, "we're getting married!!"
- Breaking up with your high school sweetheart after the distance becomes too much, you cheat on one another, stop talking, or just fall out of love.
- Falling into a pit of emotional despair that ends with you at every fast food restaurant available.
- Dating someone who is exactly like your high school sweetheart in every way, except they're not them.
- Stepping back from this new partner and feeling psycho for finding someone so similar, then breaking up.
- Cue emotional pit of despair, again.
- The clouds break, the sun comes out, you actually find someone new who treats you well!
- You date happily for a few months of school, then realize neither of you really knows what you're doing and break up. Or they graduate, cruel fate.
- This pit of despair is hard to kick, so you download Tinder.
- You swipe right a few times, no lying.
- You delete the app in utter shock and horror for yourself, your life, and your sanity.
- You realize you really don't need to date anyone, because right now you should be focusing on friends and passing whatever exam it is you've been putting off.
In the end, none of us know what we're really doing when it comes to dating at this age. We still think going to the movies and hanging out is romantic. Bottom line? Unless someone sweeps you off of your feet, focusing on friends, fun, and school never really killed anyone.
