It's that time of year again, the gyms fill up no matter what time of day and every dining court is trying to keep up with the larger salad intake. Whether you always have New Year's Resolutions or you never even think about it, here is a list of a few simple resolutions that any college student can accomplish.
1. Talk to your family.
Sometimes it’s difficult to keep up with family phone calls when school starts to get hectic. No matter how crazy your life gets during school, take time to call your family everyday, even if it’s only for a minute, because you know it will put a smile on their faces.
2. Use a planner.
Even I have issues keeping up with my day to day schedule, but one of the best things you can do is get into the habit of writing down every little thing you need to accomplish. Well, that and checking up on said list so you don’t miss anything! You will find yourself much more organized in the new year with a planner by your side.
3. Stick to a good sleep schedule.
If you find it hard to get up for classes in the morning like I do, try getting your body into the habit of waking up at that time everyday. As the year goes on it will become much easier to get up and you will be less exhausted in class.
4. Take on a new hobby!
Whether it be sewing, an instrument, or even rock climbing, pick out an activity that looks fascinating to you and go for it. If you find you don’t enjoy it as much as you thought, pick something else. You never what your new favorite interest could become.
5. Drink more water.
If you’re like me, it can be hard to get in those eight glasses of water everyday. Sometimes I don’t even have one. This resolution is one of the simplest and can improve your health tremendously. Start with one bottle a day and start to increase the number over time.
6. Take vitamins.
It seems like something for an older person, not a college student, but by taking just a simple multivitamin once a day you can increase your health and you'll feel much better too.
7. Go to class.
No matter your mood or the weather outside, get up and go to class because in the long run it will only help to go. Your GPA will thank you for braving that -2 degree day.
8. Play less video games.
Now obviously this wouldn’t apply to everyone, but for those of you that play for hours on end, see if you can cut it down by an hour. Then cut that down by another hour and so on. By adding just one more hour of study or sleep time you could improve your school work and your well-being.
9. Eat healthier
We all struggle with that voice in our head the minute we step into a dining court. We tell ourselves were going to get a salad and a bowl of fruit, then the voice urges us towards pizza and suddenly there’s fried chicken on our plates too. This year put that little voice in its place and eat better any time it’s possible.
10. Read through each syllabus you get.
It can seem very simple, but it’s one of the many things students put off. Just by reading through the syllabus for each class and highlighting important dates you will become more organized with your school work.
11. Start working out.
You told yourself last year you’d start when school did, then that didn’t happen. This year, make it happen. Plot out even just one hour a week to go and do some form of exercise. Over time you may start going more often.
12. Dedicate one day a week to dressing nice.
My closet is full of cute shirts and sweaters, yet there I am everyday in class wearing yoga pants and a hoodie. Decide to get up a little earlier one day a week and put on that cute sweater or those nice khakis (for the gentlemen). Not only will you look great, but you’ll feel great too.
