Besides a well-loved library card, an impeccable sense of grammar, and a pile of "Norton Anthologies," there are a few traits and experiences shared amongst all English majors that bond us together. From love for literary banter, to exasperation at repeated liberal arts degree jokes, if you’ve chosen to pursue an English degree you can probably relate to a few (if not all) of these experiences.
1. You can most often be found curled up in the library with a giant cup of coffee and a stack of novels balancing next your laptop.
2. You actually get excited about seeing what reading is going to be on the syllabus this semester.
3. You ask a guy his favorite book on the first date and take the answer very seriously.
4. You’re no stranger to the horrible struggles of writer’s block.
5. But you’ve also mastered the art of putting together a 12-page paper in a single night.
6. You’re constantly hunched over from the weight of lugging all those novels around in your backpack.
7. Your friends always ask you to use your awesome grammar skills to proofread their papers.
8. You have very strong opinions about Kindles and other e-readers.
9. Everyone at school/your parents/grandparents are constantly asking “what you’re going to do” with your degree.
10. Or just assuming that you’re obviously planning on being a teacher…
11. Your business/science major friends are always making jokes about how you’re never going to find a job after graduation.
12. But you’ve never regretted your major for a second because reading and writing is your passion, so you know this path is where you’re meant to be.
