The upcoming election does not look promising to many people. However, this is no reason or excuse not to vote. It is very important to vote and as citizens of the United States, we must exercise one of our basic human rights. Here are the reasons why I believe everyone should vote not only in the upcoming presidential election, but all elections to come.
1. We have the right to.
Many places in the world do not allow their citizens to vote and we are really lucky that we can. We cannot take advantage of this ability and we need to exercise the privilege that we have as Americans. It was a struggle to win the right to vote and many countries in the world still do not have this right.
2. It is our government.
As citizens, we have the responsibility to decide who runs it. We need to take the situation into our hands and elect the best possible candidate to run our nation’s government.
3. Not voting is giving up power of the people.
It is giving more power to the government and losing our voices and our opinions.
4. You owe your vote to something bigger.
You owe it to the people who are voting. Giving up your power and your right to vote hurts a lot more than you think you does.
5. There is only a presidential election every four years.
It is a major event and something that is rare and special. This is not something that happens often and if you choose not to vote, it will be your decision for the next four years.
6. Every vote matters.
Many people think that their vote will not make a difference. Can you imagine if a large portion of the country is saying that? Then, it is an amount that will matter. Every vote does make a difference.
7. There is more on the ballot than just the president.
You can leave certain parts blank if you honestly don’t have an opinion, but there are lots of different things to vote for on each ballot. At least vote for parts of it.
8. The more voices that are heard, the bigger the impact is.
When enough people raise their voices about an issue, it becomes impossible to ignore.
9. The amount that an elected official wins by can be taken into account.
Even if you know one candidate is going to win over another, vote anyway. If that individual wins by a large amount, it makes a bigger statement than if they barely win.
10. Voting means you are informed about what is going on in the country.
It means that you are up to date with current events, which is important.
11. If you don’t vote, then who will?
And don’t say the rest of the country, because that is simply not true. There are tons of people who are not planning on voting and that number is growing more and more.
12. Stand up for what you believe in.
My challenge for you is to take an hour and inform yourself on the candidates and what they believe in. Once you are informed, make a decision and go out and vote. Standing up for what you believe in is truly the only way to make a difference. Now, go out and vote!
