When I got my dog for my 21st birthday it was the best day of my life! She has taught me more about life than any college class. Here are just a few of the amazing reasons getting a dog in college is the best decision you will ever make.
1. A dog is a great cuddle buddy.
My dog always wants to cuddle! She is a 62lb hound but she loves to get in my lap and sleep for hours. It is the best feeling to come home after a long day at school, work or in general, and just cuddle up with the best snuggler around. The best part is they don’t whine like your boyfriend when you make them snuggle with you.
2. They love you no matter what mistakes you made the night before.
Your dog is never going to judge you for coming home at 3 in the morning or for how much tequila you drank the night before. They are just going to love the fact that you came home to them!
3. They always wake you up in time for class.
My dog loves to go out at 7:30 in the morning! It’s the worst! She always wakes me up so that she can go out, but by the time I get up and let her out I’m wide awake and ready to start my day. I have tried adding a snooze alarm, but so far it hasn’t worked.
4. They help you budget your money.
You will budget your money better, because you will have more than one mouth to feed. I always make sure I have enough money dog food and treats. I have a separate account for emergencies, and some of that money is saved up for emergency Vet runs. I know that I have to feed me and her so I tend to think twice about buying those new pair of shoes.
5. They help you stay home more nights than you go out.
6. They comfort you when you when you are down.
Have you ever been so sad that you didn’t think anything could make you feel better, but then you saw a funny cat or dog video on Facebook, and suddenly the world instantly looked brighter? Well imagine having your own dog video on all day with a different shenanigan every minute! My dog is always making me laugh and smile. I can’t remember the last time I was so upset that even she couldn’t fix it.
7. They make you feel like you are the most important person in the world.
Going to a giant college can sometimes make you feel like you don’t matter or no one will ever notice you; having a dog changes all of that. I sometimes try to hide so she won’t tackle me when she jumps on the bed. Sometimes I wonder if I’m going to wake up to her staring over me while I sleep.
8. They don’t fight you for the bathroom in the morning, or leave dishes in the sink.
9. They don’t steal your clothes.
10. You feel protected living in your apartment.
Having a dog will make any burglar think twice about breaking in. Your dog will always be there to give you that extra feeling of security.
11. They keep you in shape without having to hit the gym.
Who needs a gym when you have to walk your dog at least twice a day? If they are anything like my dog that leisurely walk will turn into an invigorating run.
12. You gain a friend for life.
This is the most important aspect! They will never leave your side, because getting a dog is gaining a best friend for life!
So next time you see those dogs posted on that Humane Society Facebook page you follow; just think, HEY! I could use that dog just as much as they could use me.
