I just moved apartments (2 bedrooms!!! I’m such an adult!!!) and even though it isn’t the first time I’ve lived all on my own, I’ve been thinking about what it’s like to live. Like everything else, it has it’s pros and cons.

Pro: You can decorate however you want!

You want an upside down table in your kitchen or a chair in your bathroom? You do you friend!

Con: You have to clean it all up, too.

Whatever you don’t clean, isn’t getting cleaned, and that’s a little gross.

Pro: You can be alone if you want.

No one making noise, no one to feel like you have to talk to. Bliss.

Con: The silence gets deafening sometimes.

A lot of the time, even when you don’t want to be alone, you’re alone. And that can suck.

Pro: You can have friends over whenever and for however long you want.

Your friend needs a place for a week? Cool, come on in. Party? Sure. No need to check with a roommate and make sure they’re okay with it too.

Con: You’re totally at the mercy of schedules.

I never thought I’d be scheduling hang out sessions with friends. But when they don’t live in the dorm across the hall it’s harder to find time for each other.

Pro: You can be as loud as you want.

When I come home from work the last thing I want to do is worry about whether my roommate is asleep as I’m stumbling around the kitchen.

Con: BILLS BILLS BILLS

No roommate means you’re financially responsible for every aspect of that apartment. Let’s move on I’m getting stressed just reading about it.

Pro: You can have as many pets as you want, and they can be whatever you want (pending apartment guidelines).

I have a hedgehog, and my new apartment allows dogs sooooooooooo (Don’t worry Mom and Dad, it’s not happening… Maybe)

Con: You’re responsible for all the bugs, too.

I ABHOR bugs. And whenever there are bugs here I know if I don’t deal with them, they will stay here. That is NOT OKAY.

Pro: You can wear whatever you want.

As little or as much as you want. No worries about what your roommate is going to accidentally see you in, or not see you in.

Con: Windows exist.

Just because no roommate can see you doesn’t mean no one can. And you are going to give your neighbors the fright of your life walking around your first floor apartment naked in front of your 12 foot window.

Still want to live alone? I recommend it. You learn a lot about yourself when you move out on your own.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
