12 Little Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About My College Years

Because I wish I knew it was okay to go in undecided.

12 Little Things I Wish Someone Had Told Me About My College Years
Rebecca Feigin

It's the little things that end up meaning the most in the long run. That is why I wish someone had given me advice on the little things before I went off to college. I don't necessarily regret anything, but I just figured I could give you a little guidance so that you make sure to appreciate the little things during the fastest four years of your life. I hope this helps you out and I hope you remember the little things in life moving forward.

1. Now is the time to explore.

Go on adventures in your free time. Get out of bed on the weekends!

2. Sleep is your friend.

If you had to pick between cramming for an exam and going to sleep, just go to sleep! Sleep is important, and the chances of you doing well on your exam after cramming if you don't get any sleep are very slim.

3. You don't have to drink to have fun.

If you aren't a fan of drinking, don't let peer pressure get to you. You can still have fun without a red solo cup in your hand.

4. It's important to take a break.

If you spend all of your time studying, you will never have any time for yourself. You need to give yourself a break every once in awhile and back away from your school work.

5. It's OK to go into college undecided.

Not everyone knows what he or she wants to do with the rest of their lives right after graduating from high school. Instead of jumping into a major that you may not be happy with, take a semester or two to get your cores out of the way and take some 101 classes in potential major options.

6. Take classes because they interest you.

If you are interested in a class that has nothing to do with your major, take it anyway. You'll regret it in the long run that you never gave it a chance.

7. People do change their majors.

Don't feel like once you pick a major, you need to stick with it. If you want to change your major, even if you change it more than two times, it happens. Just go for it. Do what makes you happy!

8. Cherish your time at home.

You are in a stage of life where you are transitioning between living at home and living life on your own. When you get to go home for breaks, cherish that time. Enjoy your family and your friends who you grew up with. You don't know how long you all will still get to go home to the same place.

9. There will be days when it feels like your whole life is falling apart.

There will be times when you will wake up and realize you have 1 thousand and one things to do and wonder why you spent so much time watching Netflix the night before. You are learning and you are living. Just remember that mistakes happen and you will learn from them.

10. Time goes by very fast.

Many people believe college is the best time of their life. Even if you don't think that, these four years will be the last four years before you are completely on your own. Enjoy this time and don't take it for granted. Before you know it, you will be holding your diploma and smiling for a picture while in your cap and gown.

11. Knowledge is a privilege.

Enjoy classes you are in. Throw out the idea that college classes and learning are chores. Figure out a way to find learning fun. You are lucky to be in college and to get an upper-level education. Take it as it is. Appreciate it.

12. No one cares what you look like.

If you want to dress up for class, go for it. If you want to dress down for class, go for it. If you don't feel like wearing make up, don't. Seriously, no one cares.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
