You've just graduated from high school -- congratulations! If college is the next big step in your life, you've got a lot to think about right now. There's shopping for dorm supplies, filling out scholarships, and deciding whether or not to bring your bike to school (trust me -- you should). But that stuff can wait. Right now, you're in the last summer before freshman year at university, and you should really make the most of it. So here are a few ideas on how to have the best possible summer right up until move-in day.
1. Work
I know, it's a bummer. But unless you've got a huge savings account or generous wealthy relatives, you're probably going to have to save up some cash for tuition bills. Maybe just part time, though... so you have enough time for the rest of the items in this list.
2. Read Some Books
Not only is reading great for your brain, it's a calming pastime as well. If you're taking any literature classes in the fall, see if you can sneak a peek at the required reading list. Or, just read your favorite John Green novel for the umpteenth time.
3. Write A Book, Poem, Song, etc.
We've all had that one really good idea for a novel, movie script, or smash hit that we've just never gotten around to starting. This summer, break out that notebook and jot down some lines. Who knows, you might just be the next T Swizzle.
4. Pick Up An Instrument
You know that guy on campus that sits under a tree and plays the guitar or the girl who makes drumming on her desk actually sound good? By the time fall semester starts, that could be you. Even you don't think you're musically inclined, give it a try -- you might surprise yourself.
5. Volunteer Your Time
It may not always be glamorous, but for all parties involved, volunteering is always rewarding. Hand out water during a marathon, pick up trash in your community, or even simply visit a nursing home for a quick chat. Time spent volunteering is never time wasted, and it looks great on scholarship apps too.
6. Travel Somewhere New
As cliche as it may seem, traveling is the number one way to have unforgettable experiences before college even begins. Whether it's a road trip with friends or a thoughtful drive by yourself, challenge yourself to go somewhere you've never been.
7. Take Lots Of Photos
This is going to be your best summer ever, so don't forget to document it. Photograph your food. Snap that scenic view. Take so many selfies that every single baby boomer in a 10-foot radius grumbles to themselves. Then print the pictures for your dorm room wall!
8. Eat Great Food
Delicious food is never hard to find. Go out with friends and try something from your local restaurant that you've never had before, or stop into somewhere new in your travels for a bite instead of typical fast food - you'll have enough of that on campus. Bon appetit!
9. Attend Local Events
Regardless of what your favorite punk song says, you may actually miss your hometown. While you're still here, find out about community events like concerts, farmer's markets, and art shows and check them out. Community members love the support, and you're guaranteed to have fun without having to go far or spend a lot.
10. Spend Time With Friends
This may seem obvious, but the truth is that this summer will be your last chance to spend quality time with your hometown buddies before you're off to school. Even if it's just an afternoon at a friend's house or a weekend road trip, these moments will mean the most once you're on campus and making new friends.
11. Just Relax
In the end, the time spent doing nothing often ends up being the best time of all. Chill out, take a nap, just do you -- after all, you've got a long year ahead of you. Have a great summer!
