The first wave of midterms are falling in. Homework is piling up. If you’re like me, you’re behind in not just one, but maybe two or three somethings. The days are getting shorter, so it feels like you have less time in a day, and you’re getting more and more tired and worn out.
Between work, class, homework, chores, and your social life, it doesn’t feel like there’s any time left in the day to relax and get recharged, which is especially a problem if you’re an introvert and need that space to rest and function better around other humans. Here are some strategies for getting rest even when you're busy and have a lot of things to do:
1. Journal in between classes
Taking five minutes to gather your thoughts and center yourself before your next task can help bring peace into a busy day. Writing calms me and helps to rein in my anxious thoughts.
2. Level Up
Take a study break to play one level of your favorite video game. My roommates and I have been battling through Lego Star Wars. It's nostalgic and reminds me how to have fun in the midst of business.
3. Wear comfy clothes
For me, comfiness equals less stress. The cozier I am, the more I feel like I am able to relax.
4. Eat yummy food
Munching on your favorite foods will not only give you brain bower, but it will be a delight for your tastebuds, warm your stomach and help you to feel at home wherever you are. Don't overdue it on the sugar, but don't be afraid to splurge and treat yourself. Plus, I firmly believe dark chocolate is really good for the heart.
5. Snuggle
Whether it's with a fuzzy blanket, a furry animal, a roommate or all of the above, snuggling while you read the chapter due for next class will help you relax. And doesn't this puppy make you feel less stressed already?
6. Say No
Prioritize. Figure out what you absolutely have to get done and the less important things you can cut. Don't be afraid to say no if it means it prevents you from overwhelming yourself. Some days, you need to take a break, stay in and rest like this kitty instead of partying hard or taking on more responsibility.
7. Be Still
Throughout your day, take a few minutes just to be still. Look out the window, close your eyes, don't say anything. Just breathe.
8. Distance yourself from your phone
Notifications at best are distracting and at their worst can be panic-inducing. I can get overstimulated sometimes by a constantly vibrating phone, so it's good for me to take it out of my pocket so I can focus.
9. Listen to music that relaxes you or makes you feel good
Don't underestimate the power of music and the tone it can set in your life and your work. You know what you love and what makes you smile. Listen to that.
10. Pick your workplace carefully
Work in areas you can feel safe and comfortable in. If you get anxious around lots of people and noise, don’t work on homework in a busy coffee shop or a public place. Find solitude.
11. Walk slowly
Slow down on your walk from class to class. Observe what's going on in the world around you. Enjoy the beauty of God's creation. Let your heart and mind rest.
