The continuation of my list on the best unsung performances is here. Let's get right to it, shall we?
7. Mads Mikkelsen as Hannibal Lecter ("Hannibal")
It may be hard to imagine anyone else actually being good at playing Hannibal Lecter after Anthony Hopkins portrayed the character to terrifying perfection, but Danish actor Mads Mikkelsen pulls it off. His success lies in making the role is own, rather than copying Hopkin's performance. Whereas Hopkin's played a gleeful, almost Joker-esque version of the character, Mikkelsen's Hannibal is more subdued, a quiet and deadly predator. Saying which performance is better would be like trying to determine what is better between vanilla or chocolate, or bacon or ham. Both are good, and you may have your preference, but they're just different. Mads Mikkelsen is the definitive version of Hannibal for this generation, and the future will likely see more cases like this, just as Dracula and many other icons have had definitive versions in various generations.
8. Idris Elba as John Luther ("Luther")
Idris Elba plays the role of his career in this British crime drama. This is no dumb, repetitive police procedural or fun little detective show. Elba plays a genius homicide detective John Luther, a man who is really good, but also really obsessed, with his job. Despite his brilliant mind, Luther seems unable to resist diving into the violence his passions bring. He shares an intriguing relationship with a young serial killer Alice Morgan, who is trying to guide Luther into seeing the world her way, as she challenges him on every level. Luther knows this, and it terrifies him, but also attracts him just as much, leaving viewers wondering what will become of him. Idris Elba is in the zone as he portrays this brilliant and disturbingly obsessive man on track for either redemption or self destruction.
9. Tatiana Maslany as Sarah Manning ("Orphan Black")
You may not have heard of Canadian actress Tatiana Maslany, that is unless you have been watching the BBC series "Orphan Black." In this acclaimed series, Maslany stars in her breakout role, or rather her breakout roles. The story follows Sarah Maninng, played by Maslany. Sarah is a streetwise hustler who happens to witness the suicide of a girl who looks identical to her. Opportunist as she is Sarah steals the woman's identity and doesn't think much of it, until she discovers the woman was a clone of her, and that for reasons unknown, there are many more clones of her running about in the world. Tatiana Maslany shows the full scope of her acting range in playing all the numerous clones, each with their own unique personality and backstory. It's a masterclass in acting that is deserving of an Emmy in the near future, especially seeing as Maslany has already won other awards for her performance
10. J.K. Simmons as J. Jonah Jameson ("Spider-Man" trilogy)
I have no opinions to state about Sam Raimi's "Spider-Man" trilogy, only comments about the performance of veteran actor J.K. Simmons in the role of Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson. In the world of most perfectly portrayed comic books characters, Simmons' role as Peter Parker's boss is the most accurate. More accurate than Reeve's Superman, more accurate than Ledger's Joker, or any other performance. Let me put it this way, J.K. Simmons is J. Jonah Jameson beyond a shadow of a doubt. There may well be another good portrayal of the character by another actor one day, but for comic fans there will probably never be another performance as good, so perfectly good, as the one from J.K. Simmons. Angry, bossy, hilarious, and 100-percent obsessed with destroying the good name of Spider-Man, it doesn't get any better than that when it comes to this character.
11. Julian Richings as Death ("Supernatural")
Now here comes a choice from a show you may not have expected to see on the list, but you would be hard pressed to reasonably argue against the talent in this performance. Riching's role as the deadliest horseman of the apocalypse (literally) wouldn't be out of place in a Shakespearean play or an Oscar-winning film. Death was always one of my favorite recurring characters on "Supernatural," and Julian Richings radiates power and terror every moments he's on screen. You just know he could disintegrate everyone and everything in the room, man and monster alike, with a mere thought. And you know the only reason he doesn't is because he is completely apathetic to the trivial matters of all the small little creatures crawling be swath him in the world. His entrance is also undeniably one of the best in television history. Check it out here!
