I don't know anyone who doesn't love a good animated movie. Disney or Pixar, these movies bring us back to a better time where we didn't have to worry about finals or rent or the fact that this is the third day of sitting on the couch thinking about your life choices. Of course, there are the classics: Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Little Mermaid. That's all fine and dandy, but there are so many more to choose from! Next time you need a pick-me-up, pull up something from this list. You won't be disappointed.
1. The Road to El Dorado
This movie is absolute gold. I mean, open up Netflix right now and put in on immediately gold. Two guys looking for adventure stumble across the famed city of gold, El Dorado. Due to some mix-ups with an ancient prophecy, the people of El Dorado believe these two ruffians to be gods. Complete with a sassy horse and some snappy one-liners, it's just as funny now as when I watched it the first time.
2. The Prince of Egypt
More than just a religious movie, this is the story of two brothers who, despite their love for each other, are forced on opposite sides of a conflict by divine destiny. It is a classic example of DreamWorks animation in the 90s combined with a fantastic cast of voice actors. With some of the most beautiful music written for the screen, this movie delivers what the youth call the "feels".
3. Hotel Transylvania
One of my friends actually recommended this one to me and, I was not disappointed. Watching some of the world's most famous monsters causing chaos together is pretty priceless especially when a hipster human invades their vacation spot. It may not be considered in the new Disney Renaissance, but it's definitely worth a watch.
4. The Hunchback of Notre Dame
One of the most underrated scores certainly makes for one of Disney's most underrated movies. Although it has become more popular in recent years, its darker tones do not necessarily help it to be placed in the top tier of Disney animation. Still, it is a poignant story about acceptance of self and others.
5. Robin Hood
Disney's take on one of the most famous legends of all time is nothing short of a jolly good time. Full of talking foxes, bears, and lions, this chestnut of a film is adorable in every way. If you're looking for something a little more classic, this is a great pick!
6. The Jungle Book
Another great Disney classic, The Jungle Book has certainly gotten a boost in popularity from the recently released live action adaptation. If it brings this feel-good film back into the public eye, that's great! One of Disney's older films, it has one of the most infectious scores to ever be put up on the screen. I dare you to not watch this movie and not be singing a song from it afterwards.
7. Fantasia 2000
This movie is great because it's basically a bunch of small movies in one. Each vignette is captivating in its combination of music and visual art. Boasting classics like The Sorcerer's Apprentice and Pomp and Circumstance, this collection is breathtaking to watch and hear. If you're not teary eyed by the end of the Rhapsody in Blue sequence, I don't think you are human.
8. Kiki's Delivery Service
I used to go to Blockbuster every week and rent this when I was 5. It was my first foray in Miyazaki and has had a special place in my heart ever since. The story of this feisty young witch and the struggles she faces on her own get more relevant the older I get. Even though Blockbuster doesn't exist anymore, I'm sure you can find a way to watch this film (hopefully legally).
9. How to Train Your Dragon
This movie is proof that CGI can be just as good as the classics. Based on a series of children's books, this movie takes place in a magical world where dragons and Vikings are at war. The relationship that develops between Hiccup, the son of the island's chief, and the dragon Toothless not only holds the key to healing the rift between the groups, but is absolutely precious to watch.
10. Despicable Me
Before the minion craze got out of hand, they were merely the supporting cast of this delightful movie. With Steve Carrell as the inept but dedicated super villain, it's already bound to be fantastic. Add in three rambunctious girls with distinctly quirky personalities and it becomes hysterical.
11. Lilo and Stitch
This movie made me sob in the theatre during my summer camp's annual field trip to the movies at age 6. The Hawaiian music and setting is pitch perfect (I have been there, I can attest). The female characters are unique and do not necessarily need a man to help them out of their situation. That "Ohana means family" line will get you every time, I'm telling you.
I highly recommend some movie therapy to distract yourself from the world outside. Just open your computer, search for one of these great films, and let yourself get lost in the world of film.
