11 "Uncommon" Words You Probably Didn't Know About

As many of you should know by now, the internet is full of information. Some of it useful--other bits not so much--but one thing is for sure, and that is that the internet is full of “uncommon” words. Their definitions are often superimposed on stock photos to seem artsy, or soft-grunge, or whatever the hell you want to call it. All of which prove the vast and deep nature of language, or some metaphysical bullpucky like that.

Below are a few examples of what I’ve found (minus the photos).

Nodus Tollens

Definition: The realization that the plot of your life doesn’t make sense to you anymore.
Example: Abby was soon overwhelmed by a feeling of nodus tollens when she started to feel that her life was like a soap opera.

Winsome

Definition: Attractive or appealing in appearance or character.
Example: To all the girls, every aspect of Drew was winsome, except his voice.

Dendrophile

Definition: a person who loves trees and forests.
Example: Emily was so great a dendrophile that she started dating her bonsai tree.

Petulant

Definition: Childishly sulky or bad-tempered.
Example: David started acting petulant when he felt that his work wasn’t being recognized.

Hikikomori (Japanese)

Definition: the phenomenon of reclusive adolescents or adults seeking extreme degrees of isolation, or withdrawal from social life.
Example: When Karen discovered Netflix, she began a period of hikikomori, and did not emerge from her room until two weeks later.

Introvert

Definition: a type of personality where a person is typically more reserved or reflective.
Example: David doesn’t hate you all. He’s just an introvert and needs time away from everyone else’s shit.

Nerdjacking

Definition: filling a conversation with unnecessary detail about one’s passion to an otherwise uninterested person.
Example: When the topic of the new Batman movie came up, Ben started nerdjacking all over the conversation with facts from the comic book much to the discomfort of his date.

L’appel Duvide (French)

Definition: “the call of the void”; to describe the instinctive urge to jump from high places.
Example: When all of her friends were saying they were going to jump off a bridge, Amy suddenly felt l’appel duvide, and wanted to join them.

Sonder

Definition: the realization that each passerby has a life as vivid and complex as your own.
Example: While at dinner, Cameron had a moment of sonder when he received the check, and he thought to himself “maybe I shouldn’t be a dick to the waiter and tip 20 percent.”

Bae (Danish)

Definition: poop, fecal matter, shit. Also incorporated into modern English terminology as an alternative to sweetie, babe, baby, or pet name in general, etc.
Example: David: I shit you not, if I hear someone refer to someone as “bae” one more time I’m going to FREAKING lose it.
Arianna: OMG, Chris Evans is bae.
David: Okay, that’s it I can’t take it anymore!

Thus began David’s petulant tirade and crusade to stop the use of “bae”, to the point where he was unable to fully complete this article. We, at The Odyssey, apologize for his behavior and in the case he offended anybody, and assure you he will be back to normal after an introverted period of hikikomori. His normal writings should return next week.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
