Love is hard. Whether you're dealing with the end of a long term relationship or the end of what could have been a relationship, break ups are extremely difficult. I have compiled a short, heart-wrenching playlist full of cliches and catchy beats to help soothe all of your pain and suffering. If not that, at least it gives you something to sing along to with your hairbrush as you cry in the bathtub.
1. "We Don't Talk Anymore"- Charlie Puth (feat. Selena Gomez)
While I wouldn't deem Charlie Puth's album, One Track Mind, to be a break up album, this song is definitely at the top of every break up playlist that I've made in 2016. As Charlie sings his heart out about dreaming about a beautiful, mystery girl from his past, Selena Gomez croons about "overdosing on love" from guy that she is no longer in contact with. In my opinion, this is definitely one of the best songs to cry along with after a tough break up.
2. "The Heart Wants What It Wants" - Selena Gomez
If you've ever listened to any radio station or watched any tv show, then chances are that you've heard about the tumultuous relationship that occurred between Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez. In this song, Selena Gomez acknowledges a problem that every person has: desiring someone who you know is bad for you. If you're finding yourself struggling through that issue, then this song might just be for you!
3. "The Worst"-Jhene Aiko
If there was ever a girl who knew all about relationship troubles, Jhene Aiko would be that girl. Even after stabbing a guy to death (in her video of course) and being arrested, Ms. Aiko still manages to make bitterness and heartbreak look sexy.
4. "Power Trip" - J. Cole (feat. Miguel)
Okay, so this song may not be oriented specifically towards the ending of a relationship, but clearly both Cole and Miguel have someone keep them "up all night". This song is perfect for an ice cream binge or a bathtub jam session. Whatever helps you heal!
5. "Don't Hurt Yourself"- Beyonce (feat. Jack White)
This wouldn't be a break up playlist if the Queen B wasn't included. Aside from implications toward the black struggle, Beyonce's most recent album/visual album, Lemonade, went through every stage of heartbreak from rage to acceptance. What I love about this song is how she just allows her anger to be known and she's very unapologetic. It's okay to be angry sometimes, boys and girls.
6. "Needed Me" - Rihanna
Don't ever let another person make you feel as though you need them in your life. As much as you may love and care about someone, there's another person out there just waiting to take their place.
7. "Novacane"- Frank Ocean
I mean, what else was there to listen to while we waited five years for Frank Ocean's highly anticipated album, Blonde. As self-destructive as it may sound, in this song, Frank likens a very sexual relationship with a girl to that of a relationship with drugs. While actual novacane might numb the pain for an addict, Frank chooses sex as his drug of choice.
8. "You Oughta Know" - Alanis Morissette
Obviously one of the best throwback break up songs of the 90's. If you've ever been a teenage girl and you've never had a sing-a-long to this song in the car with your besties, you're truly missing out.
9. "I Don't Love You" - My Chemical Romance
A song for when you've finally hit the acceptance stage of your break up and decide to relive your punk rock/emo teenage years. You put on that black eyeliner and send dramatic texts to your ex significant other!
10. "Ex to See"- Sam Hunt
Sam Hunt. Revenge. Kissing. What more do you need after a break up? If your ex-partner has moved on but you haven't, clearly your only option is to pretend like you have.
11. "Slow Dancing In A Burnin' Room"- John Mayer
Alas, the one song that's bound to make you want to rekindle things with an ex. It doesn't even have to be a recent ex. The soft, melodious sound of John Mayer's voice is enough to make you feel things that you didn't even know existed.
While music isn't guaranteed to make the healing process go any faster, it does make it happen a little easier. Sometimes all you need is a tub of Ben and Jerry's, a good break up playlist and a witty friend or two.
