11 Thoughts During Formal Recruitment
Nicole Lloyd

For many girls in college, these past (and next) few weeks are full of excitement as they begin their journey of formal recruitment in hopes of getting a bid from their favorite sorority. I myself am rushing this time around, so there's so mixed emotions, from nervous to elation, going on through my mind each day. Here are just some of the thoughts that have run through my head since the formal recruitment process started, and I'm sure many of my other potential new members have experienced as well:

1. What do all these terms mean??

I've heard a lot of random terms like "twin" or "pnm" and the like these past few weeks, and it's definitely taken awhile to adjust to what all these phrases mean in the greek world.

2. I have to talk to how many people these next few weekends?

While it's super amazing to be able to meet so many bubbly, interesting sisters in each of the houses, I'm definitely going to lost my voice after all these conversations.

3. Okay it's way to cold to be waiting outside all these houses.

For more southern schools, cold weather is not a factor during the recruitment process, but it's definitely a worry up here in the Northeast when it's below freezing and you're nicely dressed waiting outside half a dozen houses.

4. OMG what if the sisters don't like me??

Making a first impression is so crucial, and everyone (especially myself) are crazy nervous about making friends with the sisters you talk to in order to make it to the next round.

5. Okay which Greek letter is which?

It's definitely gonna take awhile to understand the difference between omega and theta and delta and all the rest of them...

6. How am I supposed to pick my favorite?

Each sorority has something special about them and it can be really hard to have to rank your favorites, especially since each one is so unique with their own personality and sisters.

7. Can I see myself spending the rest of my college career here?

When you pick a sorority, you're spending the rest of college being with these sisters and representing these letters proudly. When deciding on the right one, you have to see yourself representing them forever.

8. What the heck am I supposed to wear?

Each round has a different theme and dress code, so it's so hard to decide if you're outfit if making you overdressed, underdressed, or just right. Luckily, I had a super awesome Pi Chi to help me through the process and give me outfit recommendations!

9. Is this really what I want to do?

Joining a sorority and rushing is not for everyone, but even if you're a definite sister in the making, you may have doubts about whether or not this is something you want to pursue. Luckily, you may get through these doubts and enjoy the process.

10. Can it please be Bid Day already??

While it is very cool to go through the recruitment process, I honestly can't wait for it to be over and find out which sorority I get into. Can we please just fast forward a little bit these nerves are killing me??

11. I can't wait to find my future home.

While the process may be stressful, it's so amazing to think that at the end you'll have found your home where you fit in perfectly. Maybe it is worth the wait..

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
