Let's be honest, being sick sucks. What sucks more? Being sick in college. College is supposed to be the time of our lives where we cut the proverbial string from the parents and spread our wings and fly away. That's all good and dandy, but someone forgot to mention that when you get sick, you question every decision you made toward leaving home. That's what I do at least. After being sick recently, I have decided to make a list of nine things you miss while you're away from home at college.

1. Honestly, you miss being able to function

When I get sick, I usually lay low for a while like an outlaw on the run from the police. I stick to my room and rarely venture out unless it's to get food or to get some fresh air. Maybe use the bathroom if I'm feeling extra peppy.

2. You don't want to admit it, but you miss going to class...

Now before you close out the article because of this apparent ridiculous statement, just take a moment to think about it. I know for me at least, I missed going to class when I was sick. I was worried about the information I was missing. I was worried I was going to get left behind. Sure, an email and slideshows are a good replacement for missed class time but it doesn't replace it completely.

3. You miss your friends.

Being sick means that you're cut off from the world. No more social interactions for a while due to not wanting to get your friends sick, or your friends not wanting to hang with you due to fear of catching whatever you have.

4. You miss sleeping.

Ask any college student what they look forward to the most after classes and nine times out of ten, they will say sleep. When you're sick, sleeping can be hard to do so you have to douse yourself in NyQuill and hope for some nice shuteye.

5. The food, oh how you miss the normal food.

This may not be true for everyone, but the food I eat when I'm sick is limited to a handful of items such as soup, grilled cheese, macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. That's about the extent of it. Those foods are normally really tasty, but after eating them non-stop, you're ready for a change of pace. It makes your dining hall's food look pretty good.

6. You miss your bed at home...

Don't lie, you know if you had to be sick anyplace in the world, you would want it to be your bed back home. That's where you feel most safe and most comfortable. Dorm beds or the bed in your apartment just don't measure up.

7. You miss your pets.

Your pet has always been your biggest support system and while you're away and sick in college, you miss them the most. Trust me, they miss you too. All you want to do is cuddle up together and watch reruns of Gilmore Girls or Sponge Bob while you're on the mend.

8. You know you miss taking a bath.

Almost nothing can make you feel better while sick than taking a bath. In college, though, showers are all you can take when you live in a dorm. Gross.

9. Breathing out of one nostril is annoying.

We have all been there. We probably all hate it too. Breathing out of one nostril is the literal worst. I can't really describe it, it is just annoying. You just want to be able to breathe out of both nostrils... In the end, equality for all, right?

10. You miss being outside.

Nothing really makes me happier than being outside in a place that is beautiful, I did after all choose to come to school in the mountains. Being sick limits you to your room with little to no contact with the outside world and the beauty Mother Nature has to offer.

11. Lastly, you miss your mom or you're lying otherwise.

The main thing you miss/want while you're sick in college is your mom. No one, not even you, knows you better than your mother does so it makes sense to want her to take your pain and suffering away. It sucks being sick in college but being away from your mom makes it so much worse.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
