11 Things I Have My Sisters To Thank For
Jasmine Darakjy

On the day I ran home to my chapter and to all the welcoming sisters I would be spending the rest of my college years with, I truly had no idea in that moment just how much they would be impacting my life. I can honestly say that I truly don’t know where I would be in my life without these people. These are the women I know I can always count on during my best and worst days. Whether I’m looking for a good laugh or a shoulder to cry on, I know they will always be there for me at any given moment. With that being said, here are some things they have given me that I am most grateful for:

1. Allowing me to never feel like I will be judged

Knowing that my sisters love me unconditionally is something I value tremendously. Learning that I can be comfortable in my own skin around the women in my chapter has translated into me becoming more confident both inside and outside of my chapter as well.

2. Providing me with endless clothing options

Living in a sorority house is pretty much the equivalent of living in a house with a different boutique in every room. No matter what the occasion is, I know I can always rely on my sisters to borrow clothes that will fit all of my appearance needs.

3. Being my support system

Who needs a therapist when you’re surrounded by your sisters 24/7? Whenever I get upset about something, it’s always going to be okay because I know there's nothing that I can't get through with all of the love and guidance my best friends constantly provide.

4. Always coming with me to get food

It really is the little things in life that make it count, especially all the Dollar Scoop Tuesdays at Baskin Robbins, Red Bento, or even the quick Ben and Jerry’s runs to Bob’s.

5. Being my family when mine is really far away

Moving so far away from home was the biggest adjustment I have ever had to make. But, living with the women I do made it into an experience that I would never trade for the world.

6. Helping me create my Instagram posts

From picking the perfect photo to coming up with a witty caption, my sisters are my go-to for all my social media queries.

7. Motivating me to do well in school

Being surrounded by women who prioritize their schooling has significantly contributed to my success academically. It is always helpful when women in my chapter are in the same classes that I am so that we can study together. It is also helpful when they have previously taken the classes I will be taking so they can help me know what to expect.

8. Helping me with all my hair and makeup needs

Living in a sorority is also the equivalent of living in a house full of personal hair and makeup artists. Have a formal coming up? Look no further than your sisters to correctly contour your face and style your hair into a top knot.

9. Giving me boy advice

A simple text, how to approach him in a social situation, or advice on coming up with a resolution to a conflict are all examples of times my sisters have been there for me when I have no idea what I’m doing.

10. Convincing me to go out on nights I feel like staying in

On nights I want to stay in because I have a test coming up in a few days or because I simply want to watch Netflix for the duration of the night, my sisters have always been the ones to convince me to go out instead. The nights that have resulted from this in the past have been well worth it, and I have yet to regret any of these decisions.

11. Molding me into a better person

Independence, self-confidence and selflessness are just a few of the countless traits that my chapter has helped me develop further within myself. I owe everything to the group of women that continue to play a role in improving my character every single day.

These women are my best friends now, and will continue to remain so for the rest of my life. No matter how big or how small, my sisters positively influence me in ways that continue to inspire me to be the best version of myself daily. With that being said, to all the women in my chapter, thank you for continuing to play such an important role in my life. Each of you has impacted it in ways you may never know. I am grateful for all the time together we have had thus far and am excited for all the memories that we will continue to make.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
