11 Things College Has Taught Me

College has taught me more than just what I learned in lectures.

11 Things College Has Taught Me

1. I will never get enough sleep.

The recommended number of hours of sleep for adults is 7-8 hours. Being a college student, getting 7-8 hours of sleep is very rare. I learned how to sleep late, wake up early, and be tired all the time.

2. I can no longer ace tests and quizzes without studying.

High school was easy compared to college. I used to be able to take quizzes and tests without studying all the time. In college, there is no way you will get an A on a quiz or exam without studying.

3. Caffeine is amazing.

Oh wow, caffeine is a lifesaver of my grades. Caffeine has helped me so many times to stay awake to study and do my homework.

4. Living at school makes me miss my family so much.

I made the right decision living at school instead of at home, but there are times when I miss my family a little extra, especially my pets.

5. Time management is very important.

Having two or three classes a day for a couple hours out of your day is pretty awesome. It seems like you have so much time for everything. It is true but not true. You need to make sure you have time to take care of yourself, do your homework, study, eat, and sleep. 24 hours in a day is not enough.

6. Prioritizing your health is very important.

I do not have time to get sick. "Get sick" is not written in my agenda, which means I do not have time for it. It is very easy to get sick when living with other roommates. You need to learn to keep your distance sometimes. Do not share drinks, wash your hands, and be smart.

7. The friends you make in college are absolutely amazing.

It is so easy to become friends with someone. You'll see the all the time and they will always be there for you. They will help you with your homework, they will study with you, and they will always offer a shoulder to cry on.

8. I do my best thinking in the library.

It is so hard for me to get distracted in the library. The first floor libraries at school is usually the loudest floor and as you go up a couple floors, it will get more quiet. It is very nice if you like background noise or if you like complete silence to get your work done.

9. There is little to no drama.

I hated how much drama there was in high school. It was so hard for people to simply get along. In college, you can do whatever you want and no one will care or judge you.

10. I don't have to go out to keep my friends.

I don't have to go out with my friends to be their friends. Choosing to stay in to do my homework does not make me a loser and my friends will love me the same.

11. College is nothing like high school.

In college, you're always tired, always hungry, you barely have time for yourself, the workload is 100 times harder, midterm and final exams are harder, and the people are much nicer in college.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
