I have been a server since I was 16. Being a server throughout high school and college has taught me to value hard work and face challenges head on. So, here's to all the servers and bartenders out there who can relate to these struggles:
1. Holidays.
We often work holidays.
2. And weekends.
If I had a dollar for every time I was invited out on a Friday night that I had to work, I would have enough money to never work another Friday night.
3. When customers forget that you are a human.
We didn't purposely forget your straw or your third side of ranch. We want you to give us your money at the end of your dining experience so we can fill our gas tanks and our stomachs with cheap wine. If we forget something or make a mistake, we are sorry. We are not sorry for things happening which are completely out of our control. Please be nice to us and try to understand that we have families, bills, kids, and things to worry about, too.
4. The physical demand.
Serving can be physically taxing. I know that after I work a busy shift, every bone in my body feels bruised, my feet are swollen, and I haven't used the bathroom in 6 hours.
5. Being calm when you go out to eat.
I am very guilty of this. It is almost impossible for me to have a relaxing dining experience. I try to help the server as much as possible by organizing and stacking all plates and silverware for them to pick up, and insisting that he or she take their time and deliver everything at their leisure, even if they are not busy. And don't even think I don't make sure to see how much my friends tip, and then criticize them accordingly.
6. Asking for ID.
If we ask for your ID, please, just show us. We know that you are over 21, but we are just trying to do our job. If anything, just be flattered.
7. "Hello, everyone! How are you? My name is —" "Diet Coke!"
Right away, Your Majesty!
8. When your head is spinning.
We have all been there: one minute your section is completely empty, and the next minute, 45 hungry, aggressive strangers appear.
9. A compliment is NOT a tip.
Thank you for saying that I did a great job, but this tuition isn't going to pay itself.
10. Sexually suggestive and insulting comments.
Please don't talk about our bodies or make sexual jokes towards us. We don't care if you're drunk, or trying to have fun. How would you feel if someone said the same thing to your daughter or sister?
11. Should I freak out now or later?
Sometimes it's all just too much, and even the smallest thing can push us over the edge. Sometimes you can manage to collect yourself with some Lamaze breathing techniques, and other times you lose your temper and your fury spreads through the entire restaurant. We have all been there.
This is a job that is not always easy, but it's nice to share similar struggles and experiences with other servers.
