As the summer winds down and our bank accounts look more meager than ever, panic for back to school funds sets in. So we do the most logical thing we think of and work as much as humanly possible. Unfortunately this desperation involves the dreaded 12-hour shift.
So here are the inevitable stages you will go through during these 720 minutes. (Who's counting anyways?)1. Exhaustion
Wiping sleep out of your eyes as you beeline for the clock knowing you're going to need to earn every second's worth of this money.
2. Procrastination
It's an art form by which we take a simple task and avoid it until we can't any longer...and then ignore it some more.
3. Isolation
When you need to avoid every person who's managed to annoy you in the first couple hours you've been there. Not to mention the impatient/rude/unreasonable customers. We have enough attitude going around, we do not need yours too.
4. Happiness
As your best work friend walks in with the latest drama, you can't help but happy dance because this shift may have a ray of sunshine.
5. Overly Emotional
When your boss comes at the complete wrong time and continues to nitpick your every move and you really can't take it any longer.
6. Anger
And then you go to vent to your friend about the ridiculousness your life has become and he/she says the two words you never want to hear, ultimately angering you all over again.
7. "I Can't Even"
When you've hit hour eight, already heard enough of the BS, and can't take another second; you do the next best thing and avoid everything that breathes.
8. Irrationality
You lash out at innocent individuals because the pressure is overwhelming, and you don't even know why you're mad anymore.
9. Rage
When you thought you hit your breaking point earlier, but that was just a warm-up.
10. Sadness
When the realization sets in that you have to do the same thing the very next day.
11. Acceptance
But you might as well celebrate until tomorrow.
So cheers to sleepless nights and dark under eye circles because the 12-hour shifts are in full swing. But remember just keep working.
