I am a sorority girl who loves Star Wars. Everyone in my high
school knew this, and now my college friends are starting to, as well. I get
two reactions to this obsession: “That's so cool -- me, too” or “oh, that’s cool…” with an awkward laugh. I never know
which
reaction I’m going to get, especially in the Greek community. I believe that the world is divided into people
who love Star Wars, like me, and people who think it is for dorks. I hope to mend this concerning division, so here are some reasons to argue
against any patronizing reactions to your Star Wars love.
1. There is
a Princess.
Not only is Leia Organa
of Alderaan a Princess, she is also a member of the Imperial Senate, an experienced diplomat, rebel leader, part-time general (Battle of Hoth) and a
full-time badass. Not only can she shoot a blaster, but she’s not letting
anyone tell her what to do, or how to do it. Let’s face it y’all, girls
should strive to have a little more Leia in them.
2. There is
a hot rebel.
Who doesn’t love a guy that breaks the rules
every once and a while? We all do, don’t deny it. Pilot Han Solo not only has
the looks, but he’s got the right level of cockiness that girls love. Check out the pic. http://img2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20080705234747/...
3. There
is a hot villain. He doesn't seem like a villain, at first, but to any
of you who don’t already know this, the innocent Anakin Skywalker from episode one becomes the notorious Darth Vader. Let’s just take a moment to
appreciate the beautiful Anakin Skywalker before he gets completely burned by
lava and turns into a shriveled up mess. The actor who plays Anakin, Hayden
Christensen, is British, so there’s also that. Shouldn’t girls be flocking
to watch every second of this lovely specimen like they do with Channing
Tatum? http://images4.fanpop.com/image/photos/20500000/An...
4. There
is never a shortage of humor.
While Star Wars isn’t exactly a comedy, there
are always jokes sprinkled in. Good jokes or not, there are jokes. The
jokes from Episodes I, II, and III are so incredibly cheesy that I don’t see
how you can’t laugh at them.
5. Especially for the guys, there are epic battle and action scenes.
No matter how much someone dislikes Star Wars, no one can deny the incredible action
scenes. From Anakin pod racing in
Tatooine, to the explosion of the Death Star and the famous battle between father
and son, all six episodes are packed with high quality action.
6. There
is plenty of romance.
Between the ultimate badass power couple, Leia and Han, and the forbidden love between Anakin and Padme, there is
always plenty of romance mixed into these high action movies. Don’t people want to watch these power-duos kick galactic ass?
7. We
can all see a little bit of ourselves in Anakin. Maybe not the becoming a
Dark Lord part -- but, maybe. Anakin, like most young adults, thinks he is invincible and that he owns the joint. We all are like this, sometimes. When Anakin jumps from a speeder 1,000
feet in the air, he was probably thinking, “Hey I got this. Obi Wan. you are
irrelevant. Don’t tell me what to do.” We all bite off more than we
can chew and don’t need to be reprimanded by our Master/parents. Just let us
make stupid mistakes every once and a while.
8. We can see a little bit of ourselves in Luke. Poor Luke, a mere farm boy
living with his aunt and uncle on, “the planet farthest from the bright center
of the universe,” who just wants to make a name for himself. At some point in
our lives, we all want to get away from our hometown and do our own thing.
While we aren’t looking to explore the galaxy, Luke’s desire for adventure and
accomplishment is in us all.
9. There
is plenty of profanity.
Our little astromech droid, R2-D2, that everyone
loves is full of colorful vocabulary, or maybe he’s just a droid that uses
bleeps to communicate. Yeah, that’s probably it.
10.
Star Wars will forever be popular.
Whether
you like it or not, Star Wars has made a huge footprint on the movie industry
and popular culture. The original trilogy (Episodes IV, V, and VI) has received
dozens of awards. It will alway be loved by “nerds.”
11.
It is an internationally recognized franchise.
So, yeah, the whole world loves Star Wars. Might as well join the crowd
because how could you not?
