Going Greek was something I had never really considered. I had seen so many movies about sororities and fraternities and it just didn't seem like my scene. I get to college and it's literally nothing at all like the movies. My friends from freshman year talked me into rushing. I'm so thankful they did because being Greek has changed my life in the best ways. Being Greek really helped me find my place at my school and maybe it could help you find yours as well.
1. You literally have a giant family right there at school.
Being away from your family can be so difficult especially with the stress of school and work but having your Greek family who are always there when mom and dad can't be is the most comforting thing on the tough days
2. Your wins are their wins.
When something awesome happens you have a ton of people ready to celebrate with you. They want to see you do well and are so excited when you do so.
3. You NEVER get bored.
It's almost impossible to be bored when there is something always going on within your chapter rather it be a service event, social, mixer or just shopping and dinner with your sisters. you always have people there who want to hangout and have fun.
4. Relationship therapist.
My sisters are some of the first people I go to when I am having guy trouble. They have usually had a similar experience and can give advice that is quite helpful. Or sometimes they are just there to buy you ice cream and let you cry after the douche bag broke your heart.
5. Somebody to hold you accountable.
Grades start slipping? Having days where you aren't yourself? Getting lost in the ocean of life? your sisters are the best people to remind you who you are and what you stand for. They will remind you what your potential is and kind of give you the wake up call that is completely necessary.
6. You are all there for a common cause.
All sororities and fraternities have a philanthropic cause they raise money and hold events to spread awareness for, so you are all there to make and difference in this world. We all want to raise money and spread awareness to amazing causes that affect millions of different people in this world and maybe even people in our own families so it's nice to be able to share that common passion with your brothers or sisters.
7. It is home.
It's amazing how a huge group of people from different backgrounds, majors, countries, states, political and religious views can all come together and still find a place where they fit in. My sisters and I are all very different yet somehow we all still fit together. Even though we are all very different we still have a lot of common interests that bind us as one.
8. Not four years but forever.
Being Greek isn't just something you do why you are in college. Once you graduate you still have the friends you made in your chapter and fun Alum events that you can attend. You make so many connects and learn so many things that you could never just leave your sorority or fraternity behind. You take those things and those people and they follow you the rest of your life.
9. It's not mean and scary like the movies say.
I was not hazed when I was going through recruitment, my sisters never bully me or try to tear me down. They don't force me to do anything I don't want to do. It is not miserable and full of awful, mean people like the movies say. My sisters encourage me, and lift me up every day. We don't get trashed 24/7, we have goals and hold ourselves to high standard and like to strive to be the best we can be.
10. You make friends in other sororities and fraternities.
Not only do you gain an entire chapter of sisters but you gain an entire community of fellow Greeks. Every chapter on my campus does their best to support my sorority and our sorority does our best to support them as well. I have so many amazing friends that wear other letters and that is completely okay.
11. You will always be loved.
Being in Greek life means you always have a support system that loves you. My sisters love even when I myself am not so lovable. My chapter, my Greek community, my Little, all of these things I have gained from Greek life are people who love me and I can honestly say I could not live without me.
My letters don't make me better than you, they make me better than I used to be. Don't let the stereotypes alter something that is so amazing and has such good intentions. If you ever get the chance to go Greek I definitely suggest you give it a shot! I have found my family, my home away from home.
