If you live in a suburban area, you know that in every neighborhood there are the nosy neighbors, the loud neighbors, the family with 15 kids, the neighbors that never come out of their house, and the old couple that has been married for 60 years. Whomever they are and whatever they do, here are 11 reasons why you should get to know your neighbors, and love them.
1. You can borrow their stuff.
Whether you need a measuring cup, some sugar, or even a broom you can knock on your neighbor’s door and see if they have it for you. Why go to the store if you don’t have to?
2. You can ask them for favors.
If you become friends with your neighbors, every now and then you can ask them to help you out with things like feeding your dog or watering your plants while you’re away.
3. You can pawn-off your little brother/sister to the neighbor and their kids.
Sometimes we don’t want to deal with our siblings. During times like those, you can send them off to the neighbor’s house to play so you can have some me time.
4. They can watch over your house.
While you’re at work or on vacation, there’s always someone around to keep a lookout and make sure nothing sketchy is going on.
5. They can keep you company.
If you’re alone and need someone to be around, you can invite your neighbors over for dinner or chat with them for awhile.
6. You can ask them to buy things from you.
If you know your neighbors well, they almost always feel obligated to buy from you if you’re going door to door raising money for a fundraiser or selling Girl Scout cookies.
7. You can have parties with them.
Because who doesn’t love a nice block party with the neighborhood?
8. You can learn from them.
They live next to you now, but they didn’t always. Your neighbors can be from anywhere, and can tell you stories or give you advice if you listen.
9. You can play with their pets.
When your neighbor across the street gets a cute little puppy, you can swing by and give it some love for awhile!
10. They can be your friends.
Your neighbors don’t just have to be people that live on the same street as you for a few years. You can get to know them and become friends with them for the rest of your life.
11. They’re always near you.
If you ever lose your cat or have an emergency, they’re right next door and can be there in a second if you need it.
For these reasons and many more, make the effort to get to know the people that live near you, because your neighborhood can feel like your family.
