Stars! They’re just like us! Or, at least, their characters are. When everything feels like it’s going wrong or you’re having “one of those days,” sometimes the person with the best advice can be found on your television or in your Netflix watch list. Here are 11 quotes proving that your favorite characters have your back, no matter what situation you find yourself in.
1. “Don’t worry. Be happy.” – Michelle Tanner, "Full House"
On the days when stress and more work seem to be everywhere you look (and everywhere you go), this simple mantra can go the distance with you. Whether it's Michelle Tanner’s chirpy voice or Bobby McFerrin’s reggae in your head, the words are still good ones to apply to whatever turns life takes.
2. “People are capable of all sorts of things under the right pressures.” – Melissa Hastings, "Pretty Little Liars"

Waking up at 7:45 a.m. for an 8 a.m. class and still strolling in right on time? You’ve got it. Writing a report hours before the deadline? You can do that too. Never underestimate what you can accomplish when you’re under pressure. Hopefully, you’re just never using that pressure to do anything as twisted as the characters of "Pretty Little Liars."
3. “There are dreamers and there are realists in this world. You’d think the dreamers would find the dreamers and the realists would find the realists, but more often than not the opposite is true. You see, the dreamers need the realists to keep them from soaring too close to the sun. And the realists, well without the dreamers, they might not ever get off the ground.” – Cameron Tucker, "Modern Family"
If you ever question why certain people are in your life, this may just be why. You need those around you to add balance to your life and keep you in check. If you only surrounded yourself with people who thought just like you, life would be far less interesting and you might not be the best version of yourself. After all, don’t we all want a Cam in our life?
4. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. – Wayne Gretzky” – Michael Scott, "The Office"
This is a simple, go-to inspirational quote, the kind that hangs on the walls of elementary school classrooms (minus the credit to Michael Scott, of course). While I’m not advocating that you try to take credit for other people’s words/work/etc., I do think you need to be willing to take chances. And I suppose that’s exactly what Michael was doing as well when he tacked his name on to the end.
5. “I’m not crazy! My mother had me tested.” – Sheldon Cooper, "The Big Bang Theory"
If you’re ever in need of a quick comeback and you don’t care that the person may never speak to you again (presumably they already believe you to be crazy if this quote is applicable), this is the way to go. Sheldon never fails in that department.
6. “Don’t hate. You don’t want to put that out in the universe.” – Phoebe Buffay, "Friends"
For the mornings when you don’t want to deal with a lot of people and one misstep can make you hate everyone, channeling some Phoebe Buffay may not be a bad idea. Sure, you shouldn’t go around campus singing “Smelly Cat” (though that may keep everyone away from you), but being pleasant or, at the very least, civil in the morning can go a long way.
7. “I’m just really lucky to have you and sometimes I forget that.” – Miley Stewart, "Hannah Montana"
Here’s Miley Stewart/Hannah Montana with your daily reminder to tell the people in your life that you appreciate them. They may not be helping you keep the secret of your double life, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t significant enough to warrant some recognition. Go hug someone.
8. “If you’re going to have faith, you can’t just have it when the miracles happen. You have to have it when they don’t.” – Layla Rourke, "Supernatural"
Sometimes characters who are only passing through have some of the best insight. On days when your faith or strength are being tested, that’s when it’s most important. The good times are better because of the bad ones.
9. “We all change, when you think about it, we’re all different people; all through our lives, and that’s okay, that’s good, you’ve got to keep moving, so long as you remember all the people that you used to be.” – The Eleventh Doctor, "Doctor Who"
Change doesn’t always have to be scary. And being scared doesn’t have to be a terrible thing. You’re allowed to change during your time at college and after. You don’t have to hold on so tightly to who you used to be, but you don’t have to forget who you were either. After approximately 2,000 years and numerous regenerations, the Doctor would know.
10. “The great moments of your life won’t necessarily be the things you do, they’ll also be the things that happen to you. Now, I’m not saying you can’t take action to affect the outcome of your life, you have to take action, and you will. But never forget that on any day, you can step out the front door and your whole life can change forever.” – Ted Mosby, "How I Met Your Mother"
It’s perfectly normal to doubt whether or not you can make things happen. You don’t have to be the force causing everything that goes on around you. Sometimes it’s just as important to leave that up to someone else. The man who took nine seasons to find “the mother” has a lot of experience with both.
11. “The way I see it, every life is a pile of good things and bad things. The good things don’t always soften the bad things, but vice versa, the bad things don’t always spoil the good things and make them unimportant.” – The Eleventh Doctor, "Doctor Who"
In the moments where the world may seem to be at its worst, you shouldn’t forget the good things around you. Yes, you may be hurting. Yes, you might be stuck. But you will eventually leave it behind. Maybe not all of it, but some of it. Enough to be able to notice the good things again and let them be the bigger part of your life.
