11 Qualities Of All Alpha Delta Pi Women
Ashley Marie Selzer

My time as a member of Alpha Delta Pi has allowed me to meet so many different girls, each with her own gifts and talents. However, I got to thinking, “Why are we all sisters in the first place?” Well, there are a few principles on which all Alpha Delta Pi women stand, and these qualities are shared and treasured among all of my sisters.

1. We are selfless.

Any of my sisters would drop whatever they were doing to help me if I were in trouble. Any of my sisters would give an arm and a leg to another sister if it meant that she had a chance to live. That is the true mark of selflessness. Alpha Delta Pi women are known for their stellar characters, and putting sisters first is something that we are very proud that we do.

2. We are humble.

Humility is a great quality of all Alpha Delta Pi women. We are willing to step out of ourselves and give back to something greater: our philanthropy and the legacy of our sisterhood. We do not boast about how great we are because we won another sorority’s philanthropy event or how we painted the best banner. Our pride in our sisterhood shines from the inside. When we do win, we win graciously, and when we lose, we do so gracefully.

3. We are accepting.

Alpha Delta Pi accepts women of all shapes, sizes, and backgrounds because we pick our sisters from the inside first. We aren’t all tall, blonde, and stick thin, but that’s what makes Alpha Delta Pi a sacred place for those who don’t feel like they are the “typical sorority girl.” Plenty of my sisters have said that if it weren’t for Alpha Delta Pi, they would not be Greek, and I think that is something to be proud of. Looks may make you rich and famous, but in a sisterhood, it’s what’s inside that counts.

4. We are ambitious.

Now, not all of us are willing to go skydiving or bungee jumping, but something we all share is our motivation for greatness. Alpha Delta Pi women are driven and goal-oriented, and we hope to defy the common stereotype that sorority women are just in college to look for their “Mrs. Degree.” Before we can even think about having a man in our lives, we aim to stand on our own two feet and chase after the things we want. That mindset creates the strong Alpha Delta Pi women that I know and love so much.

5. We are sensitive.

Alpha Delta Pi women are known for the big smiles and their even bigger hearts. Our philanthropy allows us to interact with those that we send money to in a tangible way, and we can see the impact that our donations have on children and families both nationally and internationally. We care for the people that we serve, and we also care for our sisters. We empathize with them when they are hurting and offer our unconditional love and support, as we aim to make our houses like a Ronald McDonald House: houses built on the foundation of love.

6. We are curious.

Alpha Delta Pi women believe that growing the mind, in turn, grows the soul. In kindergarten, I was the kid who read books during nap time just because I felt like it. The passion for learning, both academically and socially, is one that extends through all Alpha Delta Pi women. We want to succeed in school and hold our education to a high standard, and we also aim to learn something interesting about each of our sisters.

7. We are well rounded.

In my chapter, we have sisters involved in most organizations and majors on campus, and that is important in creating a strong sisterhood. You wouldn’t think that a nursing major and a Spanish major would be best friends, but our sisterhood has forged unlikely and amazing friendships among our women. All of our brains, talents, and interests work together can create something beautiful in the end: an unbreakable sisterhood.

8. We are honest.

We aren’t honest to a fault, but openness is key among our sisters. If something is wrong, we expect other sisters to be truthful about the situation, and we will be truthful in return. Openness among sisters leads to better communication and better understanding. Honesty creates trust, and I believe that the trust between Alpha Delta Pi women has lead us to our reputation of one of the strongest Greek sisterhoods nationwide.

9. We are brave.

If we all weren’t brave to some capacity, then we wouldn’t have even joined a sorority. Simply joining a sorority takes mustering up a lot of courage and stepping out of your comfort zone. No two Alpha Delta Pi women are the exact same, and there really is no “mold” that our women must fit in to. Sisters are there to help grow each other by allowing each other to see characteristics in someone else that they don’t see in themselves.

10. We are supportive.

Our open motto is, “We live for each other.” If that’s not the best means of support, then I don’t know what is. Alpha Delta Pi girls always celebrate the accomplishments of their sisters, whether that’s by giving her a Sister Shout Out for doing a good job in the latest theater production or going to see her score the winning goal at Intramural Soccer. We allow our sisters to shine in what they do best, and we always encourage their endeavors outside the sorority.

11. We are proud.

Don’t confuse pride with arrogance here. We are proud to represent Alpha Delta Pi and always hold our letters to the highest esteem. Just like our lion mascot, we hold our chins up high and always say loudly and confidently that we are Alpha Delta Pi ladies. We celebrate what it means to be part of an amazing sorority and share that infectious joy with people everywhere.

These qualities make me so proud to be a part of this incredible organization. Even though I may not look or talk like the sister next to me in chapter meeting, that’s what gives Alpha Delta Pi its own special touch. I am proud to wear the pin of Alpha Delta Pi, and I love being able to share the same love of Alpha Delta Pi with my amazing and irreplaceable sisters.

First, Finest, Forever.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
