Horses are not for everyone. When I started riding, I was afraid. I was afraid of falling off, of my horse not liking me. But that's what is really amazing about horses. They teach us to love ourselves because they love us unconditionally. They make us taller than we could ever imagine. They make us realize that sometimes, you have to scoop up the crap in your life, throw it in a bucket and move on. I haven't ridden horses in years, but it's all I want to do again. When I sit on a horse (or stand, depending on the day), it gives me a different view of life, allowing me to look around me and be thankful for where I am.
I only took riding lessons for a short time in my life, but they were some of the best times I had. Some of my best friends own horses, and it is always a pleasure to go out into their pastures, even if it was only to feed them. Horses teach us so much about life, and they deserve the utmost respect, not only from their riders but from their onlookers as well. Here are some things horses have taught me in the past, making me who I am, and making me want to ride again.
1. Life is about the ride
You don't get anywhere by standing still. You have to jump on, and go.
2. Sometimes, the trails are better than the roads
Taking a harder path is so much more rewarding than the path paved for us.
3. Patience really is a virtue
You can't rush through everything in life, and your horse will refuse sometimes.
