11 Things That Happen Your Sophomore Year Of College

You're basically just a less confused freshman.

I just finished my sophomore year. All the freshmen are talking about how much they've already learned from college, the seniors are graduating and looking forward to applying their knowledge in the real world and the juniors are prepared to take on senior year. Meanwhile, the sophomores are still stuck in the middle. We did most of our growing freshman year, but we're not close to graduating. We're just kind of there. So here's what I got out of sophomore year.

1. You're basically just a less confused freshman.

You know what's going on, you've figured out your schedule, your friends and you're organizations, but you're still not that important, which brings me to my next point.

2. You still have no seniority.

You get to pick classes before the freshmen, but you still get stuck with the crappy stuff you didn't want.

3. You're stuck in the in-between phase of already being an emerged leader, but not being an experienced leader.

You're still learning to become a leader, but you've already emerged on campus. You're just hanging in there.

4. You get to be a mentor to the little freshmen.

Because, like I said, you're less confused than they are.

5. You're getting into your major classes and are suddenly realizing it's just the beginning of terror that is ahead.

Because college is hard.

6. You learn to say "no."

You signed up for every organization freshmen year, and this year you realize some of them just aren't worth the effort. You pick what you're really interested in.

7. You make fewer stupid mistakes.

You made all your dumb college mistakes in freshman year, and you can leave them in freshman year. You learned, and you've got a better idea of what not to do in college now.

8. You're not at the part where you have to start "adulting."

You still have time to figure things out and have fun.

9. You're still not 21.

Sophomore year is the year you (usually) turn 20, aka the longest year of your life.

10. You've got the general stuff figured out.

At this point, your major is declared, you know whether you're going to continue at your university or not and you've determined where you belong.

11. Although you're just hanging out in the middle, you know things will get better.

Next year, you'll be older, wiser and ready to be (somewhat) more important.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
