I don't know about everyone else, but my favorite part about parties, tailgates and bars is the music. If the music isn't good, I'm not having a good time. And if the music is good, I'm having the time of my life. For the most part, the music does not disappoint. But honestly, I can only hear the songs "Black Beatle," "Closer" and "Broccoli" so many times, and I'm sick of "Don't Stop Believin'" being the go-to throwback song. There are definitely some other great songs that are forgotten, neglected and all around under-appreciated.
1. "Roxanne" -- The Police
I'm a serious advocate for three problems: the bees dying at an alarming rate, the sharks living in the ocean and not "infesting" them and the song Roxanne never getting the recognition it deserves in today's society. It's the perfect song to sing along to with your friends. It's a work of art, and we neglect it.
2. "My Type" -- Saint Motel
The song was kind of popular back in 2015, but it never lived up to its full potential, I believe. It's upbeat, great to dance to and has lyrics that are very fun and suggestive. It's just an all around fun song of which we don't take advantage.
3. "September" -- Earth, Wind & Fire
Although I've jammed to this song with my friends, it's rarely played at parties. Even when it is literally the 21st night of September, people don't add it to their playlists. I personally think it's one of the most fun throwback songs in the books.
4. "When It's Over" -- Sugar Ray
"Fly" is the more popular Sugar Ray song, but "When It's Over" is just as good and just as well-known. It's one of those songs you still remember all the lyrics to even after not hearing it for a long time. If "When It's Over" came on at a party, I have no doubt that everyone would be able to sing along.
5. "Rich Girl" -- Hall & Oates
Like "When It's Over," "Rich Girl" is often overshadowed by Hall & Oates's "You Make My Dreams." It's a shame though because we're all really missing out. "Rich Girl" is probably my favorite song to jam to ever. My friends and I listen to it during car rides, Uber rides and basically any time we control the AUX cord.
6. "Yes" -- LMFAO
Even though LMFAO isn't the most hip band nowadays, "Yes" is still a great song. It wasn't one of the more popular songs back in 2011, but it's definitely the one LMFAO song that is still a jam five years later.
7. "Escape (The Pina Colada Song)" -- Rupert Holmes
This song isn't really something you dance to, but I think everyone is sentimentally attached to it and would love to take a minute to just listen and sing along. I really believe human beings are born knowing the lyrics, "Do you like Pina Coladas and getting caught in the rain?"
8. "Potential Break Up Song" -- Aly & AJ
This one is completely selfish, if I'm telling the truth. I grew up listening to Aly & AJ and can probably still sing along to their "Insomniac" album from start to finish. Hearing the "Potential Break Up" song while at a party would be amazing. It would bring out the "empowered twelve year old breaking up with her boyfriend of two weeks" in me, and I would love every second of it.
9. "Are You Gonna Be My Girl" -- Jet
Early 2004 offered us a plethora of amazing songs. Everyone knew this song from the iconic first generation iPod commercial and everyone had this song downloaded on said iPod. This song taught me how to be the sassy, long-brown-haired girl that I am today.
10. "You Only Get What You Give" -- New Radicals
I forgot about this song until my cousin played on the way to breakfast this morning, and it made me wonder why I had forgotten about it and why I don't listen to it all the time? It's great to both sing and dance to, and it even has a meaningful message.
11. "Fancy" -- Iggy Azalea
If people stopped trying to be so trendy and hating Iggy Azalea for no reason, we could enjoy and appreciate "Fancy" for the work of art is it. One day people are going to start listening to Iggy to be "ironic" but really it'll be because we all secretly love her music, and "Fancy" is the perfect party song.
