We are currently in the Golden Era of Television, but I can't help but feel stumped on something: the underrepresentation of dynamic female characters. This extends to all media, and though I enjoy the "Bond"
movies and shows like "Blue Mountain State," I can't help but think: Where are all the women?!
The Bechdel test is a way of determining whether or not a TV show, book, movie, play, etc. involves strong female characters. In order to pass the test, it must include at least two women who have at least one conversation about something other than men. Surprisingly, the amount of movies and TV shows that do not pass the test is astounding, even in 2016.
What are some of my recommendations that pass the test?
1. "Broad City."
One of my new favorite TV shows features two quirky girls in their 20s bonding, (hardly) working, and galavanting around New York City. This show is bound to give you #SquadGoals.
2. "Inside Amy Schumer."
This show is hilarious and surprisingly relatable. It parodies a wide variety of topics, from everyday interactions to gender norms to the media. My favorite episode is "12 Angry Men Inside Amy Schumer," a tongue-in-cheek skit showing a jury of 12 men deciding whether or not Amy is hot enough to have her own TV show. You won't regret binge watching the first three seasons on Hulu (in anticipation for Season 4 in April, woo!).
3. "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt."
Kimmy Schmidt is seriously adorable. Who wouldn't love her?!
4. "Orange Is the New Black."
A majority of the cast is female. Where else do you see that?! Also, I love how "OITNB" is diverse in casting in terms of race, age, body shape, looks, etc. This show is just so good.
5. "You're the Worst."
Why don't a lot of people know about this show?! All of the characters, both male and female, are hilarious, dynamic, and likable (but simultaneously hatable). Season two of the show tackled a deeper topic despite the fact that it's a comedy: depression. And it did a great job at it.
6. "30 Rock."
I miss this show so much! Tina Fey's Liz Lemon is a strong, independent woman who loves her friends, her work, and cheese above all things.
7. "Parks and Recreation."
Leslie Knope is the ultimate feminist, as is Amy Poehler herself. This show is as funny as it is heartwarming.
8. "Sex and the City."
That's right, you heard me. My go-to sick show, about four single women trying to find men in New York City, passes the Bechdel test. The women talk about things way beyond merely men and relationships; the show is about friendship and self empowerment. Not just sex talk over brunch. (But let's be honest, we love those parts just as much.)
9. "Gilmore Girls."
This show wins the award for Favorite TV Show to Watch with My Mom.
10. "How to Get Away with Murder."
Viola Davis' character is the ultimate badass, no matter how much you may or may not like her. The show gets a little ridiculous at times, but it sure is addicting.
11. "Girls."
I will admit that I liked the first two seasons best, it's a great show that balances comedy, reality, and relatable issues that extend way past relationship problems.
If you love TV just as much as I do, check out one or some of my suggestions! I guarantee you won't regret it!
