I've been commuting to school and work for the past three years now.
Sure, sometimes it's nice to go on a long drive to clear your mind, but not when that drive is 3-5 days a week. I drive 40 minutes to my internship two days a week and one hour and ten minutes one day a week to class. It might not seem like much, but in reality it's hell on my car and on me.
Did you know that average American spends 25.4 minutes commuting and creates "significant psychological and social stress", according to Psychology Today. Commuting can also cause bad moods, high blood pressure, generate feelings of impatience and fatigue, lower your frustration tolerance, and increase levels of anxiety and hostility. No wonder so many of us have road rage and throw up the middle finger at the careless person who cut you off.
For two days a week, my commute is over an hour in total between going to internship and coming from internship. My commute to class is roughly a total of a little over two hours with driving there and driving back home. It's frustrating and exhausting.
While it's necessary and I have to do it until I graduate this summer (I can only hope my commuting routine ends at that time), here are 11 frustrations that all commuters can relate to:
1. Having to wake up earlier in the morning
Leaving at 7 am? Stuck in traffic. Leaving at 4 pm? Still stuck in traffic.
3. Making sure you have enough money for gas or food
It sucks when you don't have time to make a lunch so you have to stop for questionable gas station food that may or may not give you food poisoning. You also being to develop disdain for fast food.
4. Being screwed if you forget your laptop charger, cell phone charger or *gasp* YOUR PHONE
The panic and disappointment in yourself are real.
5. More miles=more maintenance
You find that you need to change your oil more often than usual.
6. Dealing with asshole drivers
There's always that person who's going 10 miles over the speed limit, that other going 10 miles under the speed limit and that person who is texting, eating, driving and swerving between lanes. They're all assholes.
7. Spending a fortune on gas each week
Spending $20-$30 to fill up once or twice a week makes my bank account cry.
8. The commute adds stress to an already stressful day
The last thing I want to do after a bad day is drive home 30+ minutes and dealing with people who shouldn't be driving a car.
9. Driving long distances in inclement weather
Icy/snow covered roads + a handful of bad drivers= A bad time.
10. The realization of how much time is wasted sitting in the car becomes depressing
I mean, all you can do is sing along with the radio and think about driving across the country to start a new life, right?
11. Experiencing car troubles during your commute
Getting a flat tire when you're an hour away from home is a huge pain in the ass.
While commuting is stressful and one of the worst activities you could partake in during your life, I am grateful that I have a reliable vehicle to get me to and from class and internship so there will (hopefully) be a day where my commute is less than 20 minutes from home and my road rage will dissipate. For now, I'll sing along to some Tom Petty and take some deep breaths in moments of frustration and impatience on the road.
