When I first came to college, as silly as it may seem, I did not take into account that people will continue to have birthdays. People will continue to get older and celebrate each added year of wisdom. As a person who has gone to one to many birthday dinners, including my own, I realized that there are better and more creative ways to celebrate your birthday. I made a list of 11 different ways that birthdays can be celebrated while in college and beyond.
1. Plan a scavenger hunt around campus/city.
This is a nice idea when you are planning a birthday surprise for a friend. Plant clues around your campus, or if you are very familiar with the area, around the city. Extra points if you hide clues in your friend's classes! The "prize" at the end can be anything from cake and ice cream to a lip-syncing session.
2. Have a "getaway" vacation.
Act like tourists in your own city. Book a hotel for the weekend and visit major tourists attractions within your city. It will feel like a vacation and it would be a load of fun as well.
3. Get friends to each write personalized letters.
A friend did this for my 18th birthday and I still have all of the notes to this day. Go around your friend's dorm and ask their hall mates and roommates to write a little note to your friend. On the day of their birthday, present all of the notes to your friend and I know that they will treasure that present for a lifetime.
4. Plan a photoshoot.
College is filled with creative and talented individuals. Find a photographer on campus to do a group or solo photoshoot.
5. Instead of asking for presents, ask for toiletries or non-perishable goods and donate them.
Ask people to donate different toiletries or food to the local food bank, homeless shelter, or women's shelter. You can even use time on your birthday to volunteer and give back. Do it with friends!
6. Take a "you" day.
Simply unplug. Get your hair and nails done. Do a little shopping. Take yourself out to eat because you deserve. It is your very own holiday!
7. Have a birthday brunch.
I know that I complained about birthday dinners, but who doesn't love brunch? Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and in my opinion, the most delicious. Take classy pictures with your friends and enjoy your chicken and waffles.
8. Go on a picnic.
You do not have to go all out and rent a recreation type space. It can just be you, your significant other, and a picnic blanket. Pack some of your favorite foods and enjoy nature. Make sure to pack some bug spray and check the weather!
9. Go on a hike.
This is mainly for my nature lovers. When you go on hikes, you see some really beautiful scenes that you would not believe. You will also feel so proud of yourself when you finally make it to the top.
10. Attend a concert.
If your favorite artist is in town, splurge on those tickets and enjoy yourself. You can even attend the concert along if you want!
11. Learn something new.
Take a class! This can be anything from an improv class, a professional writing class, or even a photography class. Spend some time becoming a jack of all trades.
