Watching Disney movies on the VHS player was a huge part of my childhood, but I do not think I understood the lessons being conveyed to audiences. To my younger self, "Finding Nemo" was a cute story about a fish, "The Lion King" had the best songs, "Mulan" was a strong role model, and Hercules was so cool.

So I decided to rewatch many Disney movies, but with a greater emphasis on paying attention to the lessons and advice being taught. In the past year, so much has changed in my life from attending freshman year of college, meeting new people, and learning more about myself. The following list contains eleven of the best messages that I feel have applied to my freshman year and ones I hope to always remember.

1. It's what's inside that counts; Be yourself

Starting freshman year of college with all but one friend from my high school was nerve wracking. As it turns out, the friends I made appreciate who I am, crazy and all. Nobody has time for fake friends, so be genuine.

2. Ohana means family and family means nobody gets left behind or forgotten

At school, my friend group had family dinners at the dining hall every day. Those were some of the best memories ever. They will forever be my family and I will always be there for all of them.

3. Just keep swimming

One week I practically have no homework and then just like that, I am swamped with work. It can be tough to handle and it is easy to give up. But life goes on and somehow, someway, you will make it to the end of the semester.

4. Be true to your heart

College is full of choices due to the new found independence, new ideas, and more free time. In the end, you have to make yourself a priority and make your own decisions. It is your life, but do not get carried away.

5. Adventure is out there; Go find it

All the countless clubs and opportunities presented to you is what makes college great. So if you want to try something new or start a new organization, do it. I guarantee that you will find others who are just as passionate.

6. Change your fate

Mid-semester you realize that you picked the wrong major. Do not panic. College is a time to find out what you love to do and if you ever need help, your advisor is almost always available. Just remember that you do not have to figure out your whole life within your first year.

7. Chase your dreams

Find what you are truly passionate about. Become friends with people who encourage you. Learn from professors who inspire you. Try everything and never stop. The world is waiting. Make the most of it.

8. Go the distance

In high school, you might have been a perfect student and assignments might have been a piece of cake. Do not expect the same in college. Try your hardest and when you feel like giving up, try something new, take a short study break, ask friends and professors for help. You have what it takes.

9. Hakuna Matata

Amidst all the stress college brings, relax and laugh a little. Nobody is supposed to study all the time. If you feel like binge watching your new favorie show on Netflix to unwind, feel free. Life is too short to always be caught in the library studying.

10. Never grow up

Unfortunately, we all grow up. But do not be afraid to goof off once in a while. Chill on the quad with your friends, have random dance parties in your room. Laughter truly is the best medicine and everyone wants to feel like a kid once in a while.

11. Let it go

Ultimately, do not be afraid, Be open to meeting new people, trying new things. Four years sounds like a long time, but soon enough graduation will come and I hope you leave with a ton of fantastic memories.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
