10 Thank You's To My College Roommate

We've been through a lot together, so here's my official thank you for all the great times we've had so far!

10 Thank You's To My College Roommate
McKenna Kern

I dreaded starting my freshman year of college. There was not a single part of me that wanted to go away to school and live apart from my family. Move in day was tearful and depressing, but somehow I made it through. To thank for that was my roommate, who I’d learn to love as a sister over the next two years. We’ve gone through all sorts of things together. From our first college party to our early morning clinical days, you’ve been by my side through it all. And I’ve never had a chance to thank you properly…

Thank you for…

1. Making me feel wanted.

Our first few weeks of college are hard enough. Thank you for being my friend from the moment we met so I didn’t have to venture out all alone. You were my security blanket those first few weeks, and I couldn’t have done it without you.

2. Teaching me how to live with others.

I’m not a messy person, but I tend to leave my clothes everywhere. Thank you for making me keep my stuff organized. Even though my mom would disagree when she goes into my room at home. And sorry for still leaving my shoes everywhere and making you trip over them in the middle of the night.

3. Always being there to eat with me.

It didn’t matter if you had just eaten or not, you were always down to run for food with me. And thanks for not stopping me when I went to get more ice cream. Or when I went through my second jar of peanut butter in a week... Even though we were supposed to be helping each others' diets.

4. Reminding me how much that boy was not worth my time.

You never failed to comfort me when he let me down time after time.

5. And supporting me when I went back to him a week later.

I know you thought I was an absolute idiot for running back to him, but you never said it. Thanks for letting me do my thing, but being there when it all crumbled again.

6. Our late night heart to hearts.

Sleeping wasn’t something I ever did, but I know how much you liked your sleep. So thank you for listening to me when I decided that I wanted to spill my heart out at 3 AM.

7. Crying with me.

I still don’t know why we thought watching Nicholas Sparks movies at two in the morning during finals week was a good idea. But thank you for not letting me cry alone on the lovesac.

8. Not letting weird guys dance with me at parties.

You were always my eyes when we went out on the weekends, so thank you for getting me out of dancing with creepy drunk guys nearly every week. Let's be honest, you always could see much clearer than I could those nights.

9. Making our first year of clinical bearable.

Not sure if I would’ve survived the 12 hour shifts where we didn’t know how to do anything without you by my side. Sure the 5 AM wake up calls weren’t fun, but we always managed to find something to laugh about.

10. Being my first (and best) college friend.

I know I’ve told you before, but thank you for dealing with me day in and day out for two years running. I’m not always the easiest person to live with, and I can never thank you enough for tolerating me. I know I can count on you for anything, and I’m glad you slid into my DM’s a few years back.

Cheers to our last two years of college! Love you lots!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
