10 YA Novels You're Never Too Old To Read

I have loved to read my entire life. In fact, there was an entire summer where my parents grounded me from my books because they thought I didn’t have enough of a social life. As depressing as that may sound, I have absolutely no regrets.

I am saddened to say, however, that when I go to book stores these days, I find myself in this weird limbo between the teen and adult section. So, in light of this fact, I have decided to create a list of 10 books (or book series) that every reader must devour before they get too old.

*Warning: if you, like me, grew up an avid reader, you have probably read the majority of these.

1. "Mortal Instruments" Series

This might sound dramatic, but these six books changed my life. I mean, I laughed, I cried, I hysterically through them at walls. This series has one of my favorite romantic, angsty story lines of all time while also being action-filled and badass.

I would also recommend the spin off series, "The Infernal Devices" (SO GOOD).

2. "The Hunger Games"

This is so typical of me to mention, but honestly these books were amazing. I devoured two of them in one sitting, and waited patiently for the next to come out in stores. If you haven’t already, "The Hunger Games" series are must reads.

3. "Looking for Alaska"

I’ve heard mixed reviews, but in my personal opinion, Alaska was one of the most dynamic, intriguing characters I have ever read about. She sometimes makes you want to pull your hair out, but she is so real, it’s amazing.

4. "Pretty Girl 13"

This book was so fascinatingly different that I couldn’t put it down. There is no love story, or action-packed plot. Rather, it follows the inner struggle of a girl suffering from severe Dissociative Identity Disorder, and it seriously captivates you. This is not a book I would recommend if you’re looking for a light read.

5. "Inkheart"

Now, you may already be too old to read this book, but I had to include it because it is the one that made me love reading in the first place. Normally, I’d recommend this book to pre-teens, but if you’re looking for a light, fantasy read, this really is an amazing one.

6. "Vampire Academy"

If this is lame, I don’t care; These books got me through my youth. I devoured every single one, and anticipated each release date just as fervently as the last. These books were lustful, angsty, and had just the right amount of action to keep me entertained. I loved every second of the time I spent with this series, and I’m not ashamed of it.

7. "Stargirl"

"Stargirl" is everything you never wanted to be in high school, and everything you wish you were in college. She is different, unique, and doesn’t let society shape who she is. There is a very strong lesson to be taken from this book.

8. "The Selection"

Another book I will not apologize for loving. This is probably the lightest of all light reads. It requires absolutely no thinking, stress, or worry. Imagine the bachelor meets the royal wedding and you’ll know exactly what to expect from it.

9. "Divergent"

Like "The Hunger Games," this was a pretty typical YA series back in the day, but another one everyone should read. It has such an interesting premise and does not disappoint. Mind you, I couldn’t bring myself to get into the following books as much as I did the first.

10. "Uglies"

If you want a book that never goes where you expect it to, try the "Uglies" series. These books have likable characters, and a good message for growing teens. It has been a while since I picked these up, but I enjoyed my time reading them.

11. "Will Grayson, Will Grayson"

Another John Green book I'm obsessed with. I absolutely loved both Will Graysons, because at the time, I felt as though I was a mixture of the two. I could relate to both their problems so fluently that I loved every single moment of this book.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
