Because being in a fraternity or sorority is so much more than wearing letters on a t-shirt.

Unfortunately, Greek life is often times portrayed negatively by the media and universities. Fraternities and sororities are frequently associated with underaged binge drinking, backwards hat wearing jocks, unintelligent “pretty girls”, and students attending college for the sole purpose of socializing, rather than focusing on their degree. With hazing, sexual assault, and drinking scandals rapidly gaining national attention, people are starting to forget what Greek life is truly meant to embody. While those scandals deserve to be highlighted and awareness is needed regarding those topics, I think there’s a common misconception that all fraternities and sororities engage in those behaviors. Yes, each college campus has particular members of Greek life who may not be engaging in the most wholesome behaviors, but overall I believe that colleges greatly benefit from Greek life and these organizations deserve to be seen in a more positive light.

Here are 10 ways colleges benefit from Greek life:

1. Fraternities and sororities encourage unity, encouraging students to come together for a common cause

Whether the cause be a charity, sisterhood event, or even organizing a date party.

2. Greek life holds members accountable for meetings and deadlines

Nothing worse than being fined for missing an event or making a late payment! Are we adulting yet?

3. It serves as an outlet for students outside the classroom to relax and be themselves

Your fraternity brothers and sorority sisters know you better than anyone. Sometimes even better than you know yourself. And who else would you want to take your study breaks with?

4. Fraternities and sororities allow students the opportunity to meet hundreds of new people, often times before classes even start

People from all around the country engage in greek life, I know at least half of my sorority sisters are from out of state. Because who doesn’t want an excuse to visit California, Chicago or St. Louis?

5. Greek life provides students with numerous corporate connections, exposing them to internships and jobs in nearly every field

Alumni love getting members of their chapter involved with their companies and providing job opportunities. Let’s get networking!!

6. Each fraternity and sorority has different academic standards to which they hold their members

Whether it’s a 3.0 or a 2.5, it still serves as an incentive for better grades. No one wants to miss out on participating in greek events due to academic probation.

7. Along with GPA standards, a majority of Greek life is required to get a specific number of service hours

For my sorority, we’re required to get ten hours per semester in order to participate in our events. Many members may not be motivated to get out and serve in their community if it wasn’t for the service requirement.

8. Speaking of service, each sorority (and a majority of fraternities) pairs with an organization and organizes philanthropy events in support of that organization

Ronald McDonald House Charities, St. Jude Children’s Hospital, Red Cross and Make A Wish Foundation are some of the major organizations partnered with sororities.

9. Members are encouraged to run for certain positions within their organization, preparing them for their post-graduate careers

From social media chair to president, there are numerous jobs people can apply for, depending on how big of a commitment they’re looking for.

10. Greek life builds lifelong relationships with people you may not have gotten the blessing of meeting otherwise

Your sorority sisters and fraternity brothers truly are your bridesmaids and groomsmen. Go greek!!!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
