We’ve all done it. Maybe just a few times. Maybe quite frequently. But it has happened to everyone. You have waited until the last possible minute to get something done. Whether it is a short homework assignment for class, a project, maybe even a gift or a HUGE paper, there is/was something that you just didn’t get done until it was almost too late. If you’re a regular procrastinator, like me, there are a few things that are undoubtedly true every time you procrastinate. These are just a few:
1. It’s not due for a couple of weeks, so I don’t have to get it done right now. There’s plenty of time.
The age old long term assignment. The biggest pitfall for a procrastinator is when one sees that they have an extended amount of time to get something done, they see the opportunity to put it off.
2. Panic — this has to be done tomorrow and I haven’t even started.
Sheer panic sets in when you realize that assignment you received over a month ago is due the following day and you haven’t so much as read the directions on it.
3. It doesn’t have to be done until later in the day so I can just wake up early and knock it out.
It’s a brilliant plan. I can just wake up a couple hours early and work on getting a bunch/all of it done before my day even gets started. This way it won’t affect the rest of the day.
4. Why did I think waking up early would be a good idea?
Seriously, what was I thinking? 5:30 rolled around way too soon. I have time later, I’ll just get it done then, this way I can sleep.
5. I promised myself I wasn’t going to wait so long to do it this time.
I have really got to stop waiting to get these things done. It cannot be healthy. The last time I did this I got so stressed out I promised myself that it wouldn’t happen again. Yet here we are.
6. Next time I will get it done as soon as I find out about it.
I really will though. I promise this time is for real. No more of this last minute junk. It is too stressful. This way I can get everything done and then have actual time to do the things I do to distract myself.
7. I have got to get to work. No distractions.
TV off. Door shut. Headphones on. Phone on silent. Supplies out. Snacks and drink at hand. Time to get to work. Nothing can distract me now…
8. “Why do I write better papers under pressure?”
When it gets to the point that you start asking yourself questions. At first they seem legitimate and curious. But over time, you will come to realize that they are just time consumers.
9. Wow I never noticed how the wall is a different color there. Has it always been like that?
Who knew that the wall could be this interesting? Not me. Oh look at the ceiling, you see that weird chip. Yeah I have no idea where that is from. Did I do that?
10. I must have powers to have produced this in such a short amount of time.
Really though. It isn’t half bad at all. Only those with super powers could have done it
